alright...
so...
I was going to Chapel Hill, I was not familier with the area, I was kinda lost, I realized I was about to pass my turn so i try to make it. Forgetting that I have brand new tires and rims. So my car just slides and i hit the curb on the other side... kinda quickly. The bimmer is a mess...
Damage that i could tell that was done:
my new m3 rims on the left hand side are done.
both new tires are gashed
tie rods
control arms
left front pannel
side skirt
front bumper
***possible frame damage***
the car may be toast.
the estimate so far is 2300 USD, i only paid 7000USD for the whole car.
If there is frame damage the price of repair will go into the 3000 range :mad:
It was my own dumb fault... i realize this... please refrain from bashing me and my driving. trust me... ive done enough of that to myself.

so here are my thoughts...
try and just get this bad boy back up on the road and be in debt to my father for all eternity. or just say f*ck it and get a new car. Insurance was not filed, and there was not a police report. However im sure with my previous driving record that insurance would not be too happy with me getting an M car. I was thinking about a 330ci. I have a friend that just bought one for 12,900USD. 5spd only 90,000 miles very good shape. I wouldnt mind monthly payments. I make about 600USD a month and am in school, i dont have any bills except gas.
thoughts anyone?

I don't understand why people say "I paid X for the car - the repair would be more than I paid for the car!"
If the cost of the repair is less than the cost of a new car, I say get it repaired. Furthermore, if the car means something to you, repair it at any cost.
You made a mistake. Live with it. By that, I mean fix what you broke.
(I don't mean that to sound harsh - I crossthreaded the brake rotor nut into the hub and I had to live with that, too)

I'd get a new car, but that's just me.
If you're "in love" with your vehicle, bite the bullet and get her fixed. You said your dad will front you the money, so at least you won't have to do something like put it on your credit card and pay interest or anything on the repairs, right?
Good luck.

the only reason im saying that is because insurance wise the car would be totaled out. If there is possible frame damage i dont know if i want to try and fix it. All the stories ive heard about cars with frame damage problems just seem to lead to other things, especially with an older car.
I love this car to death. I have put a bunch of time and money into it. I'd really rather get it fixed than go through the hassle of getting a new car. However given the possible frame damage situation idk if its worth the other potential problems that I could be running into.

your right, dad is calling it a christmas present and fronting me the money for it. I have to pay it all back minus 1000USD. Also I wouldnt have intrest on the car, your right. I think another problem here is that if it gets over 3000USD my parents wouldnt like to front that money, and rather just put down 1000USD on a new car.

I would highly think your front subframe is gone, but I think the main frame is probably ok. I'm thinking just find another one. Of course, insurance may not actually total it for you at that price range.....

Its on a framing machine to see what kind of shape thats in. What all is apart of the subframe?

Well, generally it helps hold the suspension components in, while the engine is mounted to the main frame. However, this car seems to have some oddities, so I'm not 100% sure what all it holds and supports on this car. Sorry. Let us know how it goes w/ the framing machine.

fix it up and swallow the cost, this will be a lesson to you for not taking corners on public streets like its a race track.

lol, well it looks like thats what we are going to do. I think we are just going to get it fixed basically no matter what the cost.
When i found out exactly what i broke and such ill let everyone know.
I wasnt trying to take it like it was a racetrack, i was just like... Hey my turn :D
and i slid...
then i went like
lol

Still. Risking a hard turn is potentially a lot more costly (whether you hit the curb as you did, or you hit someone/thing else) than just going down one more street/exit and losing a bit of time/gas.

yeah i know... im dumb. shouldnt have done it.... DOH.
ok.......
car is broke...
total damage $5100.
im not getting it fixed... my parents would only loan me up to 3k. i dont have the money to fix it.
now the question is... how much should i ask for salvage? i already have a couple people wanting to buy the car for salvage.
any thoughts?
150k miles, car still turns over and purrs just fine.

I hear that, I did the same thing when I was young, suck it up and learn something from it. PS you prob shud have told your insurance company right away, but with what 'record' you said you had, it might not have done any help. I damaged my main frame, total repair costs were 13,000. <--- I know, thats really messed up cause I bought my car for 8,000 but somehow it was vauled at over 16,000 so the insurance company paid up. My rates whet up, but they were compensated by my exceedingly high GPA

total damage $5100.
Is that an insurance quote or a dealer quote.
If it is just a front subframe and suspension components then any reputable body shop will be able to do this. It might be worth getting a quote from a local bodyshop. At the prices dealers charge for labour (especially if they think it will be an insurance job) you might get that work done for less than 3000.
There is no way you are going to sell the car as a 'for repair' easily and I doubt very much you are going to recoup anywhere near 3000 parting it out. Plus you will have a little scrap yard outside your door (should impress dad greatly:eeps:) and still have to pay for disposal of whats left of the car once you sold what parts you can.
I would agree with scandanavian and 320what. Get some additonal quotes before making any decision.

well see... this is the place we always go to, it is a local body shop, they normally give us the best rates by FAR! (trust me... with all the crap my family does to their cars... we should know) and ill get the papers and scan what all needs to be done. the parts itself totaled to about 2800, labor was another 2300.
ill just scan the sheet and put it on rather than try and explain everything.
and YES, i know... it was my mistake... if i had the money id go ahead and do it. however there is NO way i can afford to do to this... i dont have 2,000 bucks (parents are willing to go up to $3,000), as I am in college. i have $500 in the bank. thats about it... and parents wont let me max out my credit card.

here is the sheets

Jesus that's one hell of a lot of work. It doesn't look that bad in the photo.
Having looked at the amount of work and parts involved $5000 doesnt look really expensive to have it professionally done.
It looks like your plans of salvaging it is probably your best option considering the money you have to spend.
Your only other option is to get only the work done that is required to make the car road worthy and save your pennies to get the rest done when you can afford it.
Sorry I cant help with how much you should ask as I am not familiar with car prices in the american market. I wish you luck though and hope all goes well.

Good luck. i agree, the waiting time and bills might not be worth it. you can always upgrade parts when fixing, ex oem suspension -> coilovers but if your getting the money to spend without interest and if you dont mind waiting id fix it. hmm if you think you have enough driving experience maybe upgrading would be a good idea too... perhaps a 10-20k car? with payments of course...

I really hope you can work it so that you can get it fixed. There's always a way.
Alternate estimates?

I think you could do all that yourself for around $1000 from salvage parts

sorry, i was gone for a couple days...
but yeah... here is the Verdict-
I sold the car for $1,100 to the guy that works on my car normally.
I am getting a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX (sedan)
I didnt want to leave the BMW crew but parents wouldnt let me get another BMW. what can you do huh?
car is $12,950 we are putting $2600 down on it, and my payments will be about $250 a month.
If it wasnt for the fact I didnt have a car, id prolly try to get it fixed. It would take a while, but i bet with the friends that I have in the car field, I bet i could get it done, however... I need a vehicle. I need to drive to work, I need to get to my aging grandparents to take them places... and most importantly... I have a new girlfriend  She doesnt need to be taking me out on dates anymore! hahaha!!
ps- I am sick of driving my Dad's Ford Escape Hybrid... (which he lets me borrow... on occasion)

Thats cool, best of luck with your (new to you) Subie, They are impressive cars, it would of been my next choice.
I never understood this choice. You spent $13k less the $1k salvage to avoid spending $5k on what is arguably a better car. :dunno: I guess it might make sense if the frame was wacked. Good luck with the subie. And the girlfriend.
