Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm looking at getting a 2006 X5 CPO and have been searching across multiple sites (eBizAutos, and the BMW CPO site to name a few). I'm seeing prices for the 3.0 and 4.4 in-line with each other and without going into a strict option-by-option comparison, can anyone give me a quick rundown of the differences between the 3.0 engine and the 4.4.

Obviously power output is going to be different, and I'm assuming a 4.4 CPO would have different (better) options than a comparable 3.0 but what I'm looking for here is MPG differences, potential engine issues, etc.

Basically, if the price delta between the two engines is pretty close - why not get the 4.4?

I've talked to 3 series owners that said their 330 got as good MPG as a 325/328 and I'm wondering if the same is true for the X5 engines.

Thanks!

I reached the same conclusion about a year ago. Unfortunatley, my deal didn't work out (wife wanted a Honda). Another good source of info is x5world.com

I just bought a 4.4, not a 2006, a 2003. The power differnece is quite significant. I drove a 3.0 and while it was adequate in town, thats all it was, adeuate. The 4.4i is quite a blast on sport mode and I enjoy drivning it as much as my MCoupes.

4.4s have a good deal more std. equipment, and there seems to only be a penalty of a couple mpg. The 4.4s seem to be slightly less reliable than the 3.0, and 4.4s have self-leveling rear suspension, which I would have preferred to not have, but all in all I am very hapy to have a 4.4 over a 3.0.

I've got an 03' 3.0i and like it. Yeah, it doesn't have the power a 4.4 has but, depending on your driving habits it will still get going off the line fairly well!! MPG is about 19-23 city and 25-28 hwy. Again, all depending on your driving habits.

its a big heavy sav... the 3 litre is garbage, so much lag, and lack of low end... you will regret not buying a 4.4. Its not that bad on gas at all, depends on driving style, but it has that extra kick when you need it! Ive driven the e53 3.0 4.4 and 4.8is.. also the new e70 3.0 4.8i... all n all the e53 4.8is was bad ass, just felt more suvish... new 3.0s are quite nice as far as power goes... but for the e53s... nuthin less than 4.4 id say.
