can't get in

a friend of mine has an 87 5 series and is unable to get the door unlocked. the remote won't work and using the key doesn't unlock the door either. He tried having AAA come out but they couldn't get in either. He doesn't know if the battery in the car is dead of if something else is going on. Has anybody else had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I has the same problem with my '85 528e and my guess is that the mechanism freezed. It was a cold winter morning and since I had to get to work I had to get in through the passenger side and go over the center console. By the end of the day it had gone away and never returned (at least until I sold the car!)
Once I was inside the car I tries pulling on the lock to no avail. I guess he could try one of those small lock deicing sprays?
