I’m always a little paranoid about what sort of message by ’04 325i is going to give me when I insert the FOB. This morning? Strange looking symbol I had not seen before. When to the manual – “Anti-trapping mechanism of the electric glass sunroof malfunctioning.” Solution – Have system checked. Sure, right away. I’ll just cancel today and drive to the dealer. Instead, I called, and they suggested I hold the button for 30 seconds. Surprise of the Day!!!! Didn’t work. Therefore, since I have no undercover protection for the car, I will have to take it in tomorrow.

Anyone else have this problem? Any short solutions?

I DO love this car, but honestly, I have considered hiring a technical consultant to sit in the back seat at all times and rapidly translate the little icons to what they really mean.

I suggested to the wife that we may as well go ahead and trade for a new one – after all the sunroof is broke. Now I have a big bump on the side of my head – and a malfunctioning sunroof!

This has happened to me 3 times so far - it is a sunroof software related issue.

Nothing major - your sunroof needs to be reinitialized by holding some button for a few seconds like they said - I tried that too, but I could never get it to work that way.

I always end up taking it to them and they have it done in a couple minutes.

same thing happened to me today. i picked up my 330xi from the dealership where they had just fixed a software problem that caused the steering wheel lock to jam (at an annoying rate of about once a day). it was raining out and i noticed that they returned the car to me with the sunroof tilted up. i thought that was a little odd ....but then i tried closing the roof and the switch was all screwy. hard to explain but pushing the switch back and forth tilted the roof up and down, but there was no definitive 'stop' where i could be sure the roof was fully closed. pushing the button straight up and holding it there for about 45 seconds cycled through an up and down tilt then sliding open then closed. everything worked fine after that.

Hmmm...I wonder what else they forgot to do.

Initialization Procedure for sunroof

Switch ignition on (KL-15). Starting with the sunroof in the closed position, press and hold the sliding sunroof switch in the "Tilt" direction (the switch must remain pressed for the entire procedure). After approximately 20 seconds, the sunroof will start its initialization by first storing the end position for the "Tilt" position, then moving to its fully open position, then fully closed position, and storing the end position in each case. The total time for initialization is approximately 120 seconds.
