I don't believe you'll get there with any of the supercharger kits currently available.
There are no turbo kits for the M54.
I'd say you could make 300hp with about 12K in parts and labor. Of course, you'd have MUCH less warranty coverage... And you'll need a brake upgrade at the very least.

By the time you add up the cost of the upgrades, the secondary upgrades needed to handle the power, and the maintainance, you'd be getting awfully damned close, that's for sure.

Yup... not to mention the time it would take to do all the mods and stuff.... buying an M3 would be the quickest way by far.... :D

Is your car Sienna Red? lol mine is too!!!
NE ways... i think that there aren't any forced induction kits currently that will give you reliable power. Maybe the ASA kit seems pretty nice, but so far i dunno of any yet that is reliable.
The other thing you can do is all motor... the 2.5 and 3.0 liter motor share the same block... it is really just the crank and rods that increase the stroke (as well as a few other thiings)... but it can be stroked out to 3.2 liters which will also give you close to M3 power. But i think for the M54 motor they are still being developed.
On the other hand... out on the racetrack... the 325ci is actually pretty quick!!! You'd be surprised at what the 2.5 can do. Last time i went to Buttonwillow, my car was beating Porsche Boxters and was holding off Boxter S's.
I am already very satisfied with my 184hp car... even though sometimes i drive my friend's 300hp E36 M3.

Not only that but RESALE VALUE. Mods have crappy resale at best. A car that modified would probably even be difficult to sell at all let alone a good price IMHO.
As everyone else has stated, if you really feel you need that much power in an E46, do the right thing and buy a M3. Anything else is just a silly waste of time and money.
In the meantime perhaps a driving school or two might be worthwhile to get the most out of what you already have. ;)
Good luck...

I get the UK-based BMW Car Magazine every so often and I have this issue that talks about an AC Schnitzer Supercharger for the 330i. In this issue they compare the Supercharged 330i to the Alpina B3S. And apparently the Schnitzer Supercharger is backed by a 3 year warranty. I dunno if this helps in any remote way or not. Here is the link that has a preview of the article: 330i Schnitzer vs Alpina B3S (http://www.bmwcarmagazine.com/index.asp?issue=23)

The Schnitzer supercharger gets less power at almost twice the cost, as I recall.

$6000 to esstuning.com for their supercharger gets you most of the way there.

That's not necessarily true. Mods are a toilet flush, but if he keeps it simple (supercharger) and removes it after he's done (sells it for $3k-$4k) then he hasn't destroyed resale and he hasn't spent even close to the money of an M3.
It's viable. Now, if I could only talk myself into doing it.

How about buying 330i manual trany or ZHP car. It won't get you 300 HP, but would be a much cheaper way to gain horsepower.

:) we were chatting on a similar topic a while ago in a coffee room. Our conclusion was that it depends on how long this much power is needed. If 300hp power is needed to last a spilt second and then no power ever after, it is much a smaller problem to deal with.

Haven't dyno'd the car, but I've been able to hold my own against a handful of M3's, and my buddy's M coupe. With a shorter diff (3.15 or 3.46, although the latter would be pushing it, IMO, without swapping out the tranny for the new 6sp and it's overdrive gear), I suspect I'd have a good shot at beating a stock M.
The power boost from the ESS blower exceeded my expectations; I'm very satisfied. ESS offers a supplemental warranty (seperate purchase) to cover the manufacturer's warranty (which is invalidated by the mod).
I have had no problems caused by the blower kit after 10k miles of operation. In addition to that, it was a magnificently fun and interesting project. Anyone who can handle a wrench and a screwdriver, and has moderate competency with mechanical things, can do the install. Just takes some guts to dive in -- ripping the airbox out, swapping the injectors, extending the ower steering resevoir hoses, rerouting the crankcase breather, etc. etc. etc. can be intimidating. However, if you like a challenge, and can afford to have your car as a hoby project, I'd say go for it!
I did a writeup (http://www.davidwaller.net/BMW330Cic/Modifications/supercharger/index.htm) of my installation, although I didn't have the patience to carefully document it with photos while I was doing it -- took too long.
