just put in a new cd player and the idle is off bad when i first start it its okay but after i start driving the idle stays around 2 k even when i let off the gas it wont stall it just stays between 1.5 and 2 k could it be something i messed up when putting in the cd player

I guess your talking about on your 91 318i?
If so try unhooking your stereo to see if it stops.

Ur car mite have a vaccum leak. check all ur hoses and ur air intake pipe. There might be a hole in one of those.

Also check your ICV. give it a good cleaning. Don't thing the CD player had anything to do with it.

Any chance it's chipped?
After disconnecting the power to my chipped e30s, it always took about an hour of driving to relearn. During that period, it never idled.
If it isn't chipped, I'd agree with the vacuum leak theory.

Check your speed control cable where it goes into the throttle body. If the plastic piece is broken it will cause the throttle cable to stick out a bit resulting in a higher idle. You can install some safety wire to reseat it if that's the problem.
