THought some might be interesed in this install since many have the same issue. I have an early 03 w/0 the sat pre wire. Considered doing the tuner mod for a direct audio input, but frankly the FM modulator sounds good enough. So this is really low tech but cheap and it does work great. Can be done for about $5 in parts and a couple hours. The biggest time soak was routing the wires.

Anyways, heres what you do. I used a Sirius Starmate.

1) Go to Home Depot and get black silicone sealant, black velcro and a grey or black 45 degree plastice pipe elbow, 3/4 inch size (see pic)

2) Get the starmate with the car installation kit

3) Epoxy the back of the starmate dock to one end of the 45 degreee fitting. Glue velcro to the other end (see pic)

4) Put velcro on bottom of ashtray. This setup will hold the unit fairly steady but also allow you to pull it out quickly if you are parking at an airport, etc. You could also expoxy the other end to the ashtray base for a firmer mount, however getting the plugs unplugged is a bitch. If you dont plan on removing it, that would be a better way to go.

5) Antenna- this is the cool part. I didnt like any of the exterior installations and the putting the sat antenna on the dash does not work well on our cars due to the metallic glass coating. Even worse if you have tint. You will notice 2 "cut out" parts up by the rearview mirror mount. I assume BMW put those there for toll, nav, radar detector mounts, as they know the coated glass is a problem. Anyways, cut the top off a black spary paint can lid. The sirius round antenna drops right in and is pressed against the glass by sealing the lid to the inside glass with the silicone seal. Put velcro on the bottom of the sirius antenna and the bottom of the can lid, that will keep the antenna from rattling around. Be super carefull with the silicone, jut dab it along the edge of the can lid. Make sure you prop something between the lid and the mirror to hold it while it dries. Also, clean all surfaces with alchohol for good adhesion.

I used clear silicone, which was a mistake- use black. The flash from the pics shows the silicone, however in normal light you cant see much of it at all, does not look ghetto at all.

6) FM modulator antenna- mount this by tucking under the headliner on the rear window. THere is a pretty big gap back there which hides it very well.

7) Wiring- tedious but not difficult. Antenna wire runs around the headliner, down the pillar trim then under the steering wheel to the trans hump. FM runs same in the rear, then under the door sills, under the drivers seats and under the trans tunnel trim. Get your power from any of the sources under the steering wheel (one trim panel to remove-easy)

All the wires end under the AC unit on the trans hump. Remove the 2 side trans tunnel carpeted trim panels and you have great access. Then I just zip tied the wire bundle up to the console.

The reception is 100% with this setup, I am very pleased. Sirius tells you the antenna has to be mounted on a metal panel but that is just not true.

The evolution of this is pretty funny; I paid Circut City to do the intall- what a disaster. NEVER DO THAT. They ran wires all over, mounted the unit to an AC vent and threw the antenna un on the dash. Funniest part was they mounted the FM on the front glass when it obvious to any idiot that the BMW antenna is on the rear of the roof panel! I wanted a more custom installation, so there you have it. Cheap and it works.

ALso wanted to add that another advantage of the velcro is positioning the unit in the ashtray. Keep it on the left side and you can still access the cig lighter for powering your phone, blackberry, etc. Also, as I mentioned, the camera flash really super highlights the silicone glue. In normal light, the install looks very clean.

What type of FM Mod did you use and where to you have in connected? I guess there are ones that go inline with an antenna wire, some that you just place need your antenna and others that are in the lighter plug (those don't seem to ever work). Do you have any pictures of this part of the Mod?

You should read my post about hard wiring your Sat to the radio tuner. That FM modulator is for the birds!!!

I did read that- certainly a better setup but frankly the FM modulator is good enough for the car. I really dont notice any static, but if you are particular about your tunes, the direct input is better, sure.

The FM antenna with the Starmate kit is a straight wire about 18" long. You just attach with double sided sticky stuff right up under the rear of the headliner. The BMW FM antenna is back there so it picks up really good. Like I said above, I get zero static at all.

There is room between the headliner and window in the back to tuck the thing up in there. You can see in the pics due to the flash. Normaly, the tint hides it. You cant see it at all from the inside, you have to put the camera up on it to see the terminal block.

Ok, I see! I didnt give my modulator a chance at all! Couldnt find a good 'free' station to broadcast so I quickly made a change, but it was also so I could enjoy my ipod for music and video with the best sound. You seem to have it together though. Great job

If I had the time and inclination, I would def do your mod- that is the best way to go, sonically speaking. I'm just lazy and OK with good enough I guess!:p I do wish I had the iPod input.....

Here is a question for anyone who has either taken the headliner down in the rear or has been behind the radio tuner ... does the antenna have a male/female connector anywhere on it? Where does it plug in? On my Navigator I have a Alpine XM radio. It had a FM mod that was inline on the antenna. This would be the best way to do the FM Mod if there is such a way on the 7.

There isn't a 'standard' antenna connector on the tuner it may plug in elsewhere and then runs to the tuner, but it had two data type connector on both ends. Hopefully this answered your question.

Yes that answers that part! I think I might try your mod this weekend.

I hate to hi-jack this thread, but what does it mean when your car has Sat. prep (for $200)? How is it ready for Sat. radio? I just purchased an XM portable (INNO) with home and car kits. What has BMW done for the Sat.Prep?

Chart after reading your post I tried this mod and it works like a charm. I don't see why everyone just doesn't keep it simple and go this route. Sucks that the local stores don't sell this part and you have to order it online, I didn't have one in my box. I got mine off Ebay for 10 bucks shipped.

Here's what it is http://www.satelliteradioexperts.com/SIRIUS-FM-Antenna-Extender-Kit_p_400.html

For all the non prewired guys this is an easy cost saving way to go.

it means for 800.00 your local BMW dealer can install a "SIRIUS" receiver and re program your car so it shows up on the idrive and replaces the WB station. My 04 is pre wired and i just can't seem to swallow the 800.00 for the install

You could do all that OR...run it into your arm rest. Splice into rear lighter for 12v socket. Add a 12v socket where the coin compartment is. Run anttena under driver's seat rails, back towards the trunk. Once in the trunk run the wire under the weather strip and up the side of rear window. Use double sided tape to mount anttena to the glass(all the way up next to the roof). YES, glass. It works. Doing it this way will allow you to have the unit and ALL the wires hiden at all times. Make sure you have the air on in the arm rest to keep the unit from overheatingl. Make sure you leave enough slack in the arm rest so you can move the unit around.

why would u be in your car without the key in it? you could always spend 800+ to have the dealer install it for you...I guess it all depends on how long one keeps his or her cars. I average 3 yrs so for me it is not worth it. Aside from that I have 3 cars, 3 cradles, one subscription. And for those of you "smart guys", I only drive one car at the time!:):):)

Here's a few of those antennas if anyone is looking. No that is not me selling them, just where I got mine from.
