I'm new here, but I think I've picked up that the v8 got new tech in 04 "valvetronic" or something, which I would "guess" means variable valve timing. I've not seen much about the .6 either.
Possible to find an 04 with some warranty left, but probably not for 30k.

First - beware the dealer you're looking at; I highly encourage you to look at the dealer ratings for Luxury Motors, search this thread and look at the various articles on them. IF you still want to buy from them, I highly encourage you to have the car professionally inspected - AND - if not under factory warranty make sure it's eligible for an extended warranty.

I would seriously recommend you look for a CPO or lower mileage 4.4 rather than the premium priced 4.6. There are numerous 2004+ 4.4 available...even if they only have 6-12 months left on the warranty, at least that gives you time to get any issues fixed.

As I sidenote - I've own 3 X5s 2 44's and 3.0 and have never had any serious issues; but then again they were all new, not preowned.

The 4.6is is basically a fully loaded 4.4i Sport, but adds larger brakes, some different interior trim and style 87 20" wheels. The V8 was massaged by tuner Alpina and is rated at 350 hp and 350 lb/ft of torque (vs. 315hp and 324lb/ft for the 04' 4.4). The 4.6 also has a 3.91 rear end and was probably about $15K more expensive than a base 4.4i.

It is a more exclusive vehicle, and will probably get less fuel economy than a 4.4i.

On the pro side for the 4.4i, you will have the facelifted model, the Vavletronic 4.4i, a 6speed tranny, vs. a 5-speed, and the new x-drive system which is more capable. You will also have a lower fuel, and tire bill. If you hurry, you might possibly also get a few months of factory warranty.
