It should be listed in the bentley manual. I do not have my copy with me to check.

Change the filter as well and clean out the bottom of the pan and the magnet.

your transmission is a A4S-310R

it may or may not have a dipstick if not the bentley says to take it to "authorized BMW dealer" because they have the proper gear to check for the proper level

but your transmission takes 3 liters or 3.3 quarts of dextro II for an oil change

transmission warm before you drain it

drain

remove pan

remove and replace filter

replace pan with new gasket

add oil

but bentley doesnt say anything about checking if you dont have a dip stick

anyone else know what to do?

It uses Dexron III, changing fluid won't fix this. It's a common thing on that trans, as long as there is forward drive I'd live with it.

thank you guys. this morning i felt a slight slip of gear when i stopped and drove. i am having the tranny oil with gasket and filter changed. I am also adding this fluid that helps with stopping slip and increases tranny life.

Guys is there anything else I can do? How much do the tranny repairs run? I know if I tell this to my mechanic he will say fix the tranny which is 1400 around here and I cant take that dent in my wallet now....

You certain your "E D" is lit up? or, "E R" for reverse? not just that the shifter is in the correct position, but that the electrics of the selector switch is fully engaged. Just a thought - I'm sure you've exhausted that as a possibility though....

I have this error message. The car seems to shift well but occasionally when driven for awhile it will feel like it shifts to neutral, that or its slipping hella bad.

What is the story with the E D display?

I also have 525i 1995 and sometimes when I am driving I would get a (Trans program) message from the ECU, and there gear will drop to 3. But if I try to change the gears to ER or ED or any of the other gears the car will respond with no problem. What I normally do when this happens, I switch off the car and start again. After that everything goes to normal, the gear changes nicely. Wouldn't this be related to TPS or anything else besides the tanny

go ahead and save up for a replacement or for a 5 speed swap.

Sooner rather than later, often changing the fluid in a box that is on it's way out as yours is only hastens it's demise.

This is why mine is getting a zf310 tonight...

the only time I ever got a transprogram was when I had a failing battery.
I have been told by my peers that it could be caused when the gear selector"reader" needs cleaning or the A/M switch.

I also talking to one BMW Technician about this and he said that this problem is not always caused by the gearbox, but it could be Air flow metre(AFM) or throttle position sensor(TPS) or by broken air pipe. Any of these sensors will trigger the transprogram warning message

I had the trans prog message and after quite a bit of fussing with the selector switch (To the point of using epoxy to fix the burned out reverse light contact) all was well again.
I also used to get it right before my transmission died.
I'm not 100% sure the that a/m switch would cause you any problems. you can test it by just removing it (or replacing it with the sunroof swith. Not sure if it works only on cars with the a/m or if it is for the a/e/m cars).
The TPS and a few other sensors can cause trans problems.
I would look at the TPS, Selector and battery first.

+1

I would check the selector and other sensors below the shift knob. I had a simular problem (auto trans.) where my bimmer was very slow changing gears and seemed like it would not kick into the next gear properly. It would also down shift differently then what it should have done and also when put into reverse the "R" never appeared but it was able to drive in reverse. I took it in and when the dealership (advantagecertified) hooked the car to the computer and found that my selector and some sensor (I'll have to re-look to see what it was) where not working properly. In my car they put it into S3 and the computer said that the car was in D and the other gears where appearing differently. They said they had never seen a case like that but figured out the problem and replaced my selector and sensor.

Also for certain e34 transmissions there is an update they stated where they replace certain components that are weak and replace with newer/ stronger ones. Has anyone had this done?

Check your electrical system. Is the alternator putting out more than 13 volts? How old is your battery? Check some of the electrical connectors to see that they are clean and making good contact.
