I have a 2001 3.0 X5. Build date is 9/00. I was thinking of changing the tranny fluid. What kind of fluid should i use?

Thanks,
M

Check with the auto store but, I would think Castrol Dexron III ATF should be fine.

I'm wondering that myself.....?? It's either a ZF or GM right?

I'll check other forums and see what I find out.

Check out this link I got from the e46 forum.

Looks like you have a GM5 (A5S 390R) tranny and USE ONLY TEXACO ETL 8072 B fluid!!!

Here's another location:
There should be a sticker on the bottom of the transmission pan that will tell you, or at least have the p/n for the ATF and you can find out from there.

It also tells us another type of fluid we can use.

You have the GM tranny and it is filled with synth Dex III. I had my tranny refilled last year and used Amsoil Dex III for the change.

I would just like to point out that this thread has the words "tranny" and "DP" in the title, yet somehow it's completely work-safe.

I looked under and found a sticker that said use 83229415975. I checked the part number at croenauto and it came up with NLATRANS DEXTRON IIINLATRANS DEXTRON III. I'm thinking about going with Mobil 1 ATF. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
M

Just fine so far. Considering the color/smell of the old fluid just about any replacement fluid would have been better!!

I'd stick with what is recommended by BMW. I think DEX III is one of them.

BMW say it's "fill for life"; would you stick by that?
