View Full Version : Munich is nice this week - possible to change drop off date?

The weather in Munich is great! There is absolutely no snow, but in the morning, you can see a bit of ice frozen over in places.

I was going to do pickup and dropoff at the same day, but I would really like to change it and drop it off later. Are dropoffs available on the weekends (Sat or Sunday)? Is it even possible to change my dropoff dates? Yeah, I will find out during my pickup, but would like to know if anyone has info.

I had the idea going over there that Munich would be a frozen tundra, but instead it turns out to be no worst than CA (now).

Drop-off dates are bounded entirely by the duration of your insurance. Any plans you indicated prior to receiving the car can be changed as long as they are prior to the expiration of the number plates and insurance.

Saturday is possible depending on where you are going to drop it off; the only location I know of that has regular Saturday hours is Garching. Other locations may be available at an extra fee; you would of course need to enquire at that location.

To add to what JSpira said, (and I realize you are already in Munich so it is a moot point for you), one might have a problem specifiying a date for when the drop off office is closed when doing the paperwork on this side of the pond. For example, when we did our ED we specified a weekend date for drop off knowing from info on this board that we could take care of the paperwork with Jonathan at MACO/HARMS at Garching on a weekday prior to actually dropping the car off. However, the U.S. Euro Delivery department freaked out and to make them happy we just specified Friday as the drop off date. Once in Germany there was no problem with the weekend drop off. Now of course you can specify Saturday dropoff, but I assume a Sunday or other after hours drop off (in Munich/Garching) would still be workable by checking in with Jonathan at the MACO/HARMS office to complete the paperwork and leave the extra key on a weekday prior to the drop off.

I guess I should fill you guys out on what happened.
During ED pickup, my advisor (Thomas H) was able to change my drop off date to Monday. He said if I wanted to, I could drop it off Saturday. I wanted to keep it till Monday so I didn't even consider Saturday.

Saturday morning, I look up the weather report for Munich. Says rain Sat and Sun (that would be the first time since I arrived). I decided I didn't want to drive the car in the rain on the weekend so I returned the car Saturday afternoon. Thomas at HARMS was great and gave me an option to return in Sunday if I wanted. I declined.

Guess what? It never rained Sat or Sunday. I could have enjoyed the car up till the day I will leave (Mon). Oh well....

I walked to the U-bahn train from HARMs after waiting 15-20 mins for the bus. Wasn't too bad of a walk.

So, at Garching, you can drop off on a Saturday until, I think, 4pm. You can drop it off Sunday if you get the paperwork done before the Sunday dropoff.

I'm not sure what you mean. You don't have a fixed drop-off date. The only requirement is that the car be dropped off while the car's registration is still valid.

No one had to change anything for you to keep the car longer, as long as it was within the period during which your insurance would be valid.

Most spend time driving. But one could also kill some time checking the weather forecast and cahnging pick-up and drop-off times accordingly. Cheers

When I signed my paperwork, they requested that I set a dropoff date. I think that's what the OP was referring to? :dunno: I'm not sure if this date has any bearing whatsoever on anything, because as you said, you get 14 days of insurance so as long as it's within that, I'd assume no problems.

Delivery (pickup) and drop off are separate arrangements. Delivery center may ask for your drop off date to advise you correctly on insurance. For this and only this is the date "requested"
This is a very flexible process once you meet with Thomas at Harms. However, the web site info makes it sound otherwise

This is exactly what I was referring to. Do I need to question everything I'm asked for? They asked me for a drop off date and I told them I'm dropping it off the same day that I pick up. And that, my friend, is all I knew on the way there (pick up day == drop off day). Should I think otherwise :)?

Now, if I change the drop off day, the obvious question would be, "Can I change the drop off date?" Thus the question.

Yes, you would think otherwise. After speaking with Thomas, it's a very flexible process. He even asked if I wanted to drop it off on Sunday because it would work for him as long as the paperwork was done that very day.

Ps. In response to the weather, the weather was checked at a glance on the Iphone (no more than a few secs). Obviously it was wrong because it never rained when I was there :)

Hi Gary:
Glad you figured out the flexibility Thomas @ Harms offers. Now put away that iphone and hit the Abahn. Enjoy.
