I have a 318ti and the key will rotate without catching approximatly 1 out of 10 times. I have read on this forum about the e36 ignition system problems some say the barrel or tumblers cause this problem some say ignition. i was told by the local BMW dealer that the trim ring could cause this problem.

I do all the maintenance on my e36 318 and e46 325 but, never attacked and ignition problems. Looks like as long as the key will catch the tumbler is simple to remove, is that right?

I don't want to buy any un-needed parts can a mechanic out there tell me a good way to check.

it is the ignition switch and that is a very easy issue to solve. Maybe 5mins for a @80 part

Also do you have a aftermarket alarm system? That can cause issues as well if the theft system is malfunctioning

Thanks to David Mc I corrected the switch problem today. I didn't have any metric parts so I drilled the hole 1/16 and then used a dremmel to cut off part of the 1/16 bit shank and inserted it in tumbler case. I did have to take a cordless drill with 1/16 bit and open the slot in housing very little. Took about 20 minutes to fix.
