View Full Version : BMW alarm on 96 328

I have just bought a 1996 BMW 328. It seems to have come with a factory fitted alarm system but the key fob doesn't seem to do anything.
A little red light flashes on the fob when I press the button so the batteries should be ok. I'm hoping that it just needs to be paired with the car somehow.
By the way I did a search and found instructions for a 2 button remote but none for the type of remote I have.
Cheers
Matt
EDIT: When seated inside the car pressing the button sets off a few beeps etc and starts the alarm LED flashing. I guess the button only activates the alarm, is it possible to get this button to also act as remote central locking?

I've read the manual a bit more carefully and it seems that remote central locking is part of the total closure option (which is only available on the 3T-EWS system).
So how do I know if I have the 2L or 3T-EWS system (does anyone recognise the fob?) and if I have the latter how do I know if I have the total closure option fitted?
:dunno:

UPDATE: It seems I do have the total closure option fitted but there is a problem. The boot and passenger door are locked remotely but the drivers door is not.
I am guessing this means the drivers door lock actuator is broken. (I understand this is a common fault). Am I right about this or are there some fuses I could check first.
Also range is very low for the remote (I have to be standing by the drivers door). I will replace the batteries to see if this helps.

I have searched and there seem to be a lot of posts related to central locking problems. Sorry for making another.
I am quite prepared to carry out the actuator replacement procedure however I would like to check all possible fuses and relays first. Where are they located? I only bought the car today so I don't have my bentley manual yet.
Are there separate fuses for each door? If there is only one for all doors I can rule out the fuse because the passenger door and boot (trunk) actuators still work.

On my 4 banger the fuses are under the hood, driver's side in a black plastic box. The contents are very clearly marked.

All the fuses look good. I will see how long I can live with having to lock the drivers door manually but it seems like I will be replacing the actuator soon.
