Surely many of you have heard of the Timing Case Profile Gaskets used in the 318i M42 engines prior to 11/93. They are said to have a failure rate of @90%. (A summary is at the bottom here).

My 318i was made after that in 03/94, yet my tech is stating I have an oil and coolant leak originating from this seal. The fly in this oil is that I never had a steady drip in my driveway until they replaced vent valve and breather hose and the valve cover gasket.. Oil immediately started appearing on my driveway and I have had to add oil twice in @15 days.. Hard to believe it is that Timing Case gasket since it didn't leak steadily before. The repair ticket also says 'R+R upper intake manifold', and I don't know how that impacts this. HEEELLLPPP!

So, has anyone had a failed Timing Case Profile Gasket on a POST 11/1993 m42 engine which would be using the newer seal? You would know as the repair requires removing the head cover and costs $1200 or more at a shop.

From the internet:
According to BMW Technical Service Bulletin Number 11 10 93 (3885) dated 11/93, the Timing Case Profile Gaskets fail due to inferior/defective rubber used in the manufacture of the actual gasket. Cars built after 10/93 have Timing Case Profile Gaskets made with "an optimized rubber material composition".
