I don't know if this is old news or not but I just saw it in the 5 series forum. Maybe it would help with the X3 too. :dunno:

That's unfortunate. I thought it was pretty much the same tranny.

I tried this yesterday on my 2007 X3. SUBJECTIVELY speaking, it seemed to make a small but noticeable difference in the firmness and abruptness of the shifts in Drive. In Sport Drive, I really didn't notice much difference. I drove a new 2008 X3 automatic last week and felt that its shifting characteristics were superior to mine, e.g. smoother, less abrupt off-idle, etc. Again, the difference IMO was subtle, but I did sense a difference. YMMV.
