View Full Version : Kayaks on top

Since I have sold the only vehicle I ever carried my sea kayaks on, what racks have you found to work best for carrying sea kayaks, and do you use front and/or rear tie-down straps? The racks I used previously would not work on the X3 and I had places to tie or fasten a front and rear tie-down strap to each end of the car. Are the kayaks secure enough without front/rear tie-downs? Thanks.

I didn't realize that there was no a tow hook underneath the front of the X3? I'm about to order one I assumed there would be at least somewhere up front. :yikes:

We have Yakama racks that work fine on the '07 X3. Yakama makes an adapter that lets you attach their cross bars to the X3 side rails.
We tie down the front and back of the kayaks to the tow hooks - we bought an extra one. This works well except that the driver's side kayak is tied at a angle - so far not a problem. Installing and removing the tow hooks is quite easy.
I would provide pictures, but the racks are off for the winter.
