Is there a how-to for replacing the pads/rotors on a 2001 X5 3.0i? I found a bunch of info on the 3 series/M3 but nothing for the X5? I am asking for a friend of mine who needs new brakes front and rear. She was just quoted $1200 for the repair and I think I can do it a LOT cheaper. I have replaced the brakes/rotors on my Maxima a couple of times and this doesn't look that much harder. Where is the best place to buy OEM parts? I was looking here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=FA53&mospid=47745&hg=34&fg=05

I listed the parts below that I think I need. Am I missing anything? Also, what are all these HEX keys I see on the parts website? Do i need them?

Front:
REPAIR KIT, BRAKE PADS ASBESTOS-FREE $111.04
BRAKE PAD WEAR SENSOR $18.41
BRAKE PAD PASTE $2.50
HEX BOLT (?????) $2.44
ROTORS $118.30

Rear:
REPAIR KIT, BRAKE PADS ASBESTOS-FREE $99.88
BRAKE PAD WEAR SENSOR $18.41
BRAKE PAD PASTE $2.50
ROTORS $72.54

Total: $450

Thanks for any advice!!

Thanks for the info. I went to both of those sites but I'm not sure which brand I need. What is OEM? I heard from one shop that a lot of the aftermarket brakes for BMWs are total junk. I want to make sure I get the same parts that she would get from the dealership.

Original Equipment Manufacturer= OEM.
There are others that have used the pagid brand and have been fine. That's what I'll probably get.

Straight forward if you have done brake work before. I got the rotors (Brembo) and pads from tirerack.

Do a search, this has been covered before. I've done the brakes on my wife's X5 three or four times, posted photos here too. Link: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=97042&highlight=brakes

OEM consumable parts are made by Zimmerman (rotors) and Pagid or Jurid (pads).

Brembo and Axxis(Mintex) are good aftermarket brands. Again, so a search, you'll find loads of info.

Replaced the pads and rotors with TireRack parts. Looking forward to low dust pads. SS lines go on tomorrow. 89K miles and set for the next 50k!

Thanks for the links, fellas!

I'll add my 2 cents:

Props to anyone seeking not to get screwed by the dealer...

I buy decent aftermarket rotors- metal is metal. And I buy OE pads unless I have specific needs for different performance.
