If you are doing a PCD and driving north, here are a couple of suggestions based on our trip last week.

First, Asheville NC is a very nice destination for your first night. It's less than 2 hours via a very scenic and fun drive, and it is full of nice restaurants and B&Bs. Jonathan Stribble suggested a really nice route using SC 290/276 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's an ideal first drive for your new ride. Lots of twists and turns but no chances to go TOO fast. And a lot of nice scenic overviews where you can photograph your new car with great backgrounds before it gets too dirty!

In Asheville itself, we stayed at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn and can recommend it highly. While touring the Biltmore estate we saw the Inn at the Biltmore, which looks very nice but is a LONG way from anything in town. On the other side of town is the Grove Park Inn. We went there for a drink (great idea in the cold months when the huge fireplace is blazing!), but again it is a long way from the center of town. If you have the time, stay two nights in Asheville and don't miss the Biltmore. In Asheville we had a really nice dinner at Cafe on the Square, and they do live acoustic jazz on Tuesday nights.

Going north, weather prohibited us from taking the Parkway as planned, but I-26 from Asheville to Johnson City TN is a very pretty road for an interstate, and I-81 north to VA is not to bad either. I put it on cruise and shifted back and forth between 5th and 6th periodically. If you CAN take the Parkway, do.

An unlikely destination is Christiansburg VA. It's a small town not far off the BRP, and it's worth a stop if only for the Oaks Victorian Inn...one of the nicer B&B's we have stayed at. If you opt to take the BRP north from Asheville it would be at the end of a nice day's drive. We can also recommend the Summit Restaurant. After a phone call from our hostess at the Inn they were nice enough to open for us (a big snowfall at hit the town the night before and people were slow to dig out). They were shovelling the drive when we got there, and then they went in and made us a delicious dinner...we had the whole place to ourselves!

Congrats

Glad you enjoyed route 276. That is a really fun road that is worth a drive by anyone that will be in this area heading north.

Good to hear you had a safe trip home, Enjoy!

I was born and raised in Asheville and still return frequently. I would recommend the Grove Park Inn all day long. It is so far from downtown Asheville, it may take you 15 minutes (on a bad day) to travel the 5 miles to downtown. Biltmore, on the other hand may be 7 miles from downtown. If you want a great road trip from the Performance Center, go north from Greenville on Hwy 25 until you get to Satate Hwy 11; go west on Hwy 11 until Hwy 178 (maybe 176) to Ceasar's Head. That is a great mountain road but a bit crowded on the weekends.

I was wrong about the miles from the Grove Park Inn to downtown Asheville: according to Google Earth measurements, it is about 2.25 miles. Less than 3 from downtown Biltmore.

I'm sure they won't mind the plug, so I'll make a suggestion:

It's a B&B owned by some fellow 'Festers that I met during my ED, very nice people. I haven't stayed there myself, but plan to on my next Asheville trip, only a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Nice...Greenville isn't too far from the Tail of the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/). Definitely will be heading out there.

That Grove Park Inn looks pretty ritzy -- looks like I'll need a few money trees to stay there.

I'll be headed to Greensboro, NC after my PCD on May 9. Are there any travel suggestions if I'm headed that way (basically through Charlotte)? Thanks.

In Greensboro, the O'Henry Hotel and the Green Valley Grill are very nice.

Unfortunately, if you take I-85 out of Spartanburg, you will be in Charlotte afternoon traffic all the way from Gastonia to Concord, at least, and it's heavy. You might want to look at a map and find a way to stay off I-85 and I-77 near Charlotte. You might enjoy a ride up to Asheville and get on I-40 there and take that to Greensboro. It will be longer but the scenery is much better, and you'll be on some nice winding roads (fun!)

Enjoy your PCD. We did ours Mar. 3. Don't miss a hot lap with Donnie! You will be treated like royalty down there. Take a good appetite because you will be fed very well.

Not any good alternatives that I know of from here to Greensboro, NC without going way out of the way.

diana gave a good idea above about going to Asheville and then taking I-40 across. This will definetely add time to your drive. However, I enjoying driving more than sitting in traffic

If you decided to do that. You use the following directions:

I-85 Nort to I-26 West
I-26 West to Highway 11
Make a right on Hwy 11
At 4-way stop turn left onto Hwy 9.
Take Hwy 9 until it ends @ Lake Lure, NC (Don't speed anywhere near this town)

From there you can do one of two things:
Turn Left onto Hwy 74-A and follow that until you hit I-40 in Asheville, NC
Turn Left onto Hwy 74-A and then turm right in a few miles to continue on Hwy 9 to I-40.

Another route to I-40 that is not as much out of the way (not as many twisties either)
I-85 North to Hwy 221
Turn left onto Hwy 221 and follow it all the way to I-40.

See you soon
