ATF ....how much is needed?

86', 528e, 6cyl, 4PH 22 auto trans (car's MFD of 4/86)

I'm planning a ATF and filter change this weekend.

I'm a bit confused about how much fluid I'm going to need to replaced when I change both fluid and filter......some say 2.1 qt. and other say 3.2 qt. ??

I'm only going to do a one-time drain and replace filter, then re-fill. Is this considered to be a "drain and fill"??

Also, is there just one O-ring to replace (only one came with the kit of a metal box filter and rubber pan gasket )?

BTW- the Bentley states to have a drain pan that is able to hold 7 qt. ??

Found on another website that it takes 3 to 4 quarts if its just a drain fill. If you let it drain for a longer period of time it could go up to 7 to 8 quarts.

Update:
Got the job done this past weekend. No problems....no leaks.:thumbup:
I let it drain and got only 4 quarts out (old still looked clean and reddish; no burnt smell:)).
Replaced filter and fluid (4 quarts). On to next project.....
