I notice a thread here or there referring to Comfort Stop, but haven't found anything in my BMW literature or on their web site... The notes I have read mostly complain about it as being un-comfortable as the vehicle stops.
I didn't notice anything objectionable in the test drives I did. Is it present on the 2008 550i? And, just what is it, how does it work, and what is its intention?
Thanks,
Cal

Comfort Stop is not a very useful feature because using it requires you to "unlearn" good braking habits. Normally you brake moderately, and as you approach a full stop, you let off slightly on the brake pedal so you don't jolt your passengers and give them spinal cord injuries.
What Comfort Stop does is it releases brake pressure slightly at the last moment before you come to a standstill. In order to get a feel for it, you must maintain a constant brake pressure from the moment you apply the brake to the moment the car comes to a stop. If you push harder or let off a bit anytime within that timeframe, the feature will not work because it assumes you'll bring it to a soft stop yourself. If done correctly, you will feel the slightly "slip" sensation at the last moment. You kinda need to have faith in the electronics.
Honestly, don't sweat over it because doing a soft stop yourself works better anyways. The Comfort Stop doesn't make it seamless like a normal human can.
This feature should be in all new BMWs as of MY2007 with the upgraded braking features.

Sounds like a waste of engineering, but we'll see. Thanks,

So let me get this straight -
The ULTIMATE driving machine now brakes for you, adjusts steering input (Active steering), and makes sure you don't get too close to the car in front (Active cruise).
Man, I would be embarassed to have all that crap on my car.
It seems like driving a BMW is almost like getting on a subway train now.
