I realize I should either know this, or be able to find out for myself. Does the '08 X3 come with an alarm? If not, what is alarm pre-wiring?

Apparently, and I am shocked, because every VW does in the states, and I am about to find out how much they hose you to get it at the dealer.

BTW BMWNA doesnt share its schematics concerning wiring related to alarms. So very hard to install your standard "Viper" aftermarket alarm.

BMW feels that their anti-theft features are such that they don't need to include an audible alarm as standard equipment. Other than putting it on a flat bed, it's not easily stolen. As to a deterrent for break-in, it's best not to leave cell phones, gps devices or mp3 players in plain sight as well as their connectivity devices.

Dealers can charge anywhere from $500-$800 to install the OEM alarm which is:
BMW X3 Alarm System
Part Number 65 73 0 420 696
You can install it yourself and it can be bought for under $250. If it's like the alarm on the E9x, you will need to have the dealer program your vehicle to recognize the installed alarm.

You would think at $40k plus that it would have an alarm instead of just a blinky light--It don't even chirp the horn when you lock with the key fob---:dunno:

Rats! When I went by the dealer the other day to look at them, I saw the same blinking red light on the rear view that my X5 has and assumed it had an alarm. What is the red light for? Just a meaningless visual deterrent, with no actual function?

Alarms don't mean very much thesedays. My friend has an '04 X5 (alarm included) and someone broke into their car, and stole their GPS that was left on the dash.

Use common sense folks. Alarms don't stop determined and professional thieves.
