Looks like my 95 318i will need its head gasket replaced. I'm trying to decide between 2 different shops to get the work done:

One shop specializes in European cars and has quoted me 1800-2000 for head gasket replacement and valve job, and resurfacing of the head.

Another place that is not specialized has quoted me $1250 for the same work. They are very reputable, and I have done business with them before with my other cars.

I'm wondering if the head gasket fix on the 4-cylinder is a straight forward job for most any mechanic, or it will there be some pitfalls that a specialist would only be aware of?

I had mine done on my 316i, cost an arm and a leg, ended up getting a reconditioned engine put in,, all fine now though

depending on how badly the crack is on the head they will have to SKIM the head. the more the head has to be skimmed the more performance you loose. im not sure if the head can be resurfaced or not. but $2000 seems a little pricey
its not a really big job. couple hours i think. but most mechanics would have to send off to another shop(engineering outfit) to get the head doctored.

Iv heard people say that when the heads done it never performs as good.

If you have the time sir, id recommend getting maybe another engine, having it reconditioned to whatever standard you wish and put that one in. cost a little more but more peace of mind

i just emailed a website in the united kingdom and asked how much a reconditioned engine would be. when they get back to me il let you know
