Has anyone ever wondered why the side mirrors aren't autodimming, like the rear-view mirror?

Rear view mirror is auto dimming? Is that standard? Never saw my wife's 04 auto dim when driving.
:dunno:

It appears that all the mirrors on my 2008 Prem Pkg X3 ,are auto dimming. My older cars the 2004/2006 with the same prem pkg only had the interior mirror auto dim.

The side mirrors on our 07 are autodimming (as is the center rear view mirror). I believe that all came as part of the premium package.

The side mirrors are particularly easy to tell if they dim as there is a small border all around the edge of the glass that doesn't dim, about a 1/4" wide, so the contrast is noticable when it's active. Often when it's bright and sunny outside (been a while here in Seattle!) and dark in the garage the car thinks it's night and dims the mirrors until we back the car out. You can really see the dimming/undimming in action then, it's pretty neat.

It was not offered until the facelift in 2007, at least for the outside rearview mirrors. The E46 didn't have them either IIRC. And remember, the E83 is a LOT like the E46.

My wife's 04 has the premium package. I also noticed a small dot in the top center of the mirror.

Does she has auto-dimming and is there anything that needs to be done to activate it the first time?

Yes, that little dot in the inside rearview mirror is the photo-light sensor. It dims automatically when the headlamps are on.
