Hi everybody-
I am new to the forum and new to bmw. I have been reading the forums for a few months but just decided to ask a question. My wife and I are doing the pdc in march on our new (and first bmw) e92 and I know that the cars at the pdc are automatic and I have read all the threads. I was wondering if bmw at the pdc can teach my wife to dive stick while we are down in carolina. I know that it would not be free and I dont mind paying. All the driving schools in upstate ny only have auto and the car rental places around here only offer auto. Does anyone know if bmw will teach stick?

No way. Is a set agenda, time is limited, not the mission of the PDC. My bet: no way.

Have you thought about buying a stick shift winter rat? (beater car) Atleast that way when she burns the clutch it's no big deal.

If you can drive a stick, you can teach your wife to do it. Find an empty parking lot that's level, and have her move the car around using only the clutch (no gas). She'll figure it out quickly. The only hazard here is that you may reveal how your feelings for the car compare to your feelings for her.

I was with my wife when she learned to drive stick many years ago but can't say I taught her. I explained very briefly why you have to shift gears, then she drove around in an empty parking lot on several occasions. Finally we went to the airport and I took off on a business trip, so she had to drive home by herself. Worked like a charm.

In other words, just do what raleedy said. You don't really teach someone to drive stick; you're just patient and supportive while they learn.

As you guys figured, they do not offer any type of instruction on learning to drive a manual.

Our entire fleet contains automatics now with the exception of some M vehicles for the M Schools were we do teach heel toe downshifting.

My suggestion would be for you and your wife to go test drive any type of vehicle that has a manual and 2 seats. This way the saleperson can't come along to see what is happening :bigpimp:

As someone stated earlier, taking her to a large parking lot that is fairly flat and getting her to just slowly release the clutch to get the car moving will allow her to get the feel of how it engages. From their it is just practice and seat time before she will get comfortable with it.

Good luck, your patience and marriage will be tested in this task

I'd lease your first stick instead of buying it  :D
