I am thinking of getting summer wheels for the X3, and was wondering how many have 20's on theirs. If you do, post up some pics as I am very interested to see it and get your comments on the ride quality. I know it will diminish from the 18's on there now, but by how much?
Thanks.

Oh, here is a photoshop of basically our car (actually BMW's press car) with X5 replicas in black chrome that someone did for me. I'm not sold I like the look, but it's not bad. What do you guys think?

Not set on chrome, just thought black chrome would be something different and may look good. But out of curiosity, why do both of you say to stay away from chrome?

I think on 20 rims ,chrome is a bit much . I do like it on 17 and 18 rims. The black chrome does look nice though.

i have a 2007 x3 and i am also thinking about 20" rims for the summer. i would like to get 275 for the rear and 255 for the front. both aspects 40 - 45. i think chrome is out and will buy silver colored wheels. i am looking at wheels thru eurotech wheels.
any info on the above thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks

I like chrome, and think it looked pretty good on my truck when I had it. But being that the X3 is pretty much void of any other chrome accents, it may not be the way to go. As I said, I am not set on chrome. lol.

Here's a pic of my truck with chrome rims. I know it's not a BMW, but still my favorite vehicle to date with gobs of power.

Well, the speedometer is going to be off no matter what tires are on the 20's.
With 255 40 R20's it will be off by -1.7 mph at 60 mph.
With 255 35 R20 it will be off +0.5 mph
And with 275 35 R20 it will be off -0.7 mph.

275 40 R20 are off too much (-3 mph or roughly 5%) to consider IMO.

So the 35 aspect ratio is the best for the 20's, but it will be a fair bit harsher ride I think. I want to get other's opinions if they have 20's to see real world results.

mystic,
check out the snitzer 2007 x3. it has 21" rims with 9 wide front and 10 wide rear. the tire sizes are 255 30 21 f and 295 25 21 rear. i think we'd be ok with 20" rims with the width as above. i personally do not want such low profiles as these. i am more interested in a smooth ride over the sport look.

I saw those and they look good. I don't think there will be any issues with the width of the rims as long as the offset is correct, but I think my issue will be with the sidewall size as well. In order to have the same wheel diameter (or close to it) you will need a 35 sidewall ratio which will be a little harsh esp with the sport susp. I am thinking 19's would be the way to go in order to get a more compliant ride.
Does anyone know if BMW can reset the speedometer to adjust for a larger diameter wheel/tire combo? If so 20's might be OK with a taller sidewall.
