For my website I am constructing a list of hotels which have been tried and tested by you all and which you have found to be outstanding for one reason or another. I would like to receive your recommendations and the reason(s) why. They don't have to be big, expensive hotels - small & intimate or comfortable, great value ones ones can be equally, if not more, of interest.

Please send your suggestions to edwintertires@hotmail.com

The more, the better and they can be anywhere in Europe,

Your comments will be confidential and I am only going to list the hotel details and a short description. No reference to your name will be included!

Many thanks!

No, hotels in any country in Europe! Those which you would recommend for ambience, value for money, location etc

Here are generic hotels that offer predictable accommodations for you and your car:
Holiday Inn Munich North
Holiday Inn Munich City Centre

Hotels that I've liked, and are worth mentioning:
Hotel Gerberhaus - Rothenburg odT
Hotel Bayerischer Hof - Lindau

The next two are castle hotels on the Rhine.

Schloss Rheinfels, Sankt Goar http://www.schloss-rheinfels.de/ (http://www.schloss-rheinfels.de/)
Very nice, great views.
Auf Schönburg, Oberwesel http://www.burghotel-schoenburg.de/ (http://www.burghotel-schoenburg.de/)
Super luxurious. Pricey but very, very special.

Some of the hotels I stayed at on my ED last October. My parents were with me except for Prague.

Le Meridien (Munich) - Excellent hotel, well appointed rooms, helpful staff and a great lounge. Well located, directly accross from the train station and walking distance to Marianplatz.

Bayerischer Hof (Lindau) - Charming hotel right on Lake Constance. Great Spa and excellent restaurant. Surprisingly well priced.

Goldener Hirsch (Salzburg) - Beautiful Inn that dates back to the 15th century. Real old world charm (but with modern conveniences). On the Gedreidegasse, the main shopping street, which also features Mozart's birthplace. Top notch but pricey.

4 Seasons (Prague) - What can I say it's a 4 Seasons, so it's expensive. Great location right on the river, one can walk to Prague castle and all the tourist areas in town. I've stayed at several 4 Seasons and this was one of the best. It seemed like every single staff member knew my name! Top rated Italian restaurant in the hotel as well. If you want to splurge somewhere, this is the place to do it.

Kempinski Hotel Gravenbruch Frankfurt
Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich
Brenner's Park – Hotel & Spa - Baden Baden
Marriott Munich - Berliner Str.
Rennisance Munich - Berliner Str.
Rennisance Garmish
Graf Zepplin - Stutgart
Marriott Munich Airport (not really at the airport)I have stayed at all of these hotels during the many ED's that I have done over the years. All of these are quite satisfactory, with Brenner's Park Being the most notable with a great location and charm you just don't find anymore.

Germany only in this list:

Berlin
Schloßhotel im Grunewald (fantastic, but not centrally located)

Dresden
Taschenbergpalais (very good)

Frankfurt
Steigenberger Frankfurter Hof (very good, but got to be too expensive)
Arabella Sheraton (very good, esp. for a modern hotel; now I think it is re-branded as a Westin)

Hamburg (both very good)
Atlantic
Fairmont VJ

Munich (listed in order of my preference, top to bottom)
Mandarin Oriental (ex-Rafael)
Vier Jahreszeiten
Bayerischehof

Munich airport
Kempinski (very good, directly at the terminal, easy walk to the S-Bahn)

Rothenburg odT
Gerberhaus (small, friendly, well-run)

[Note to BMW: I was able to alphabetize my list by location; you should do the same!]

I've only got 1 to add and it is in the Reutte area (in Austria but convenient to Fussen and the Schwangau castles). My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Moserhof and absolutely loved it. Great breakfast, good restaurant which was packed with locals, and the room was large by European standards. It was in Rick Steves but so were a couple of others that we tried and didn't like as much. Parking was very good also, and the price was great (we paid 84 Euro /night for a double in summer 2007).

Great idea for ED John, thanks!

Munich - Mandarin Oriental - great service, location, food. Rooms are superb with Bang & Olufsen video / audio equipment
Vienna - Hotel Sacher - the most beautiful place I've ever stayed in - feels like one is in Habsburg palace.
Praque - Four Seasons, great location, service
Rome - Hotel Eden, best restaurant in town with superb view of Rome, beautifully furnished and very well managed
Florence - Grand Hotel, breathtaking view of the city from many rooms, including mine. Delux rooms are furnished Renaissance-like
Milan - Four Seasons, best restuarant in town, rooms are strikingly modern, popular hangout with international models

Could you maybe add a price range to each hotel? Doesn't need to be exact, or maybe just a grouping. Like Expensive, Moderate, Cheap. aka Can afford, College, Me. :)

NEW! With flowery prose!

Here are generic hotels that offer predictable accommodations for you and your car:

Holiday Inn Munich North: Located in trendy Schwabing, covered garage, about three blocks from the Münchner Freiheit U-bahn station. Recently renovated.

Holiday Inn Munich City Centre: Connected to the Rosenheimer Platz S-bahn station, but the walk to Marienplatz is easy in good weather. Garage under hotel.

Hotels that I've liked, and are worth mentioning:

Hotel Gerberhaus - Rothenburg odT: Quaint, comfortable, friendly staff, enclosed garage.

Hotel Bayerischer Hof - Lindau: Underground garage 1 block away, great view of the Harbor and Bodensee. If it's not a four-star hotel, it certainly feels like one.

The next two are castle hotels on the Rhine.

Schloss Rheinfels, Sankt Goar http://www.schloss-rheinfels.de/ (http://www.schloss-rheinfels.de/)
Two portions to the hotel, one in the castle, one adjacent to the castle. Very nice, great views of the Rhine.

Auf Schönburg, Oberwesel http://www.burghotel-schoenburg.de/ (http://www.burghotel-schoenburg.de/)
Super luxurious, with wood paneled rooms, marble, brass, etc. Each room is unique. The tower room is unreal, like a fairy tale. Overlooks the Rhine. Pricey but very, very special.

Intercontinental Berchtesgaden - Incredible scenery. Fantastic spa, restaurants and service. Splurge for a panarama suite and be awed by the views. Not inexpensive by any means.

Hotel RosenVilla on the outskirts of Salzburg. No elevator, some rooms are dated but a charming little hotel where you can self park your car. Fantastic breakfast and charming service. 10-15 minute lesiurely walk along the salzach into downtown Salzburg. The least expensive hotel of our stay but one of our favorites.

Sure, it's worth checking that site out too and although it's excellent, we all know that there are so many false comments posted on there that you can never wholly rely on it. At least with our own comments page we'll know that the opinions are totally genuine and from first-hand travel experiences of Bimmerfest members!

What a great idea!

I'll play - Pensione Wildner in Venice. Right on the water - just doors down from the Danieli, so you get the same view for 1/4 of the price. Nice hotel, clean - not fancy by any means but I think it's lovely and you cannot beat the view - and I've stayed there twice. (220E in May)

Florence - Antica Torre di via Tornabuoni. 250E in May. I've also stayed here twice. There is a huge rooftop terrace - you can see Fiesole from there. Well appointed, good service, fabulous location (across from Ferragamo - they ship!). Via Tornabuoni is a chi-chi shopping street. All the big Italian designer names right there.

Hohenschwangau -- Hotel Müller -- . Friendly helpful staff. No excessive charges for extras. Good restaurant.

Amsterdam -- Golden Tulip Amsterdam Art -- 4* and 3* on same property. We stayed at 4*. Secure underground parking. Can be great value through on-line booking. Just outside historic Amsterdam.

Munich

Hotel Uhland. http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html This is a great little hotel in a 100 year old mansion with clean rooms a great breakfast and a friendly helpful English speaking staff. Internet access and free WIFI in most rooms. Free parking at rear of the hotel. By using the bus #58 which stops at the corner and the U Bahn you have easy access to all of München. It's two stops on the bus#58 change to the U Bahn U6 at Goetheplatz and two stops to Marianplatz. Ganz einfach. Get a U-Bahn pass at the information booth at the airport. Staff was outstanding when my wife had an health emergency they found us a wonderful doctor which saved our trip.

Berchtesgaden

Hotel Maria Gern http://www.mariagern.de/ which is located in an alpine valley above Berchtesgaden. Beautiful mountain views from our balcony and a wonderful little church next door. The villagers came to church on Sunday dressed in Dirndls and Lederhosen. Very colorful. The rooms were clean and roomy, the breakfast and other food was very good. The owners speak some English not a lot. The only negative were the towels, they must have got them at a flea market, thin and old. Photos are from our balcony and on the road below.

Füssen

In Füssen we stayed at Suzanne's B&B. Which is run by an American woman who runs a tight ship. The rooms were large ,bright and airy and the breakfast was great. Suzanne is very knowledgeable and can offer good insight and advice on travel in Germany. http://www.suzannes.de/

Rothenburg ob Der Tauber

We stayed at the Hotel Gerberhaus in the Old City.http://www.romanticroad.com/gerberha...lish/rooms.htm It was a super place to stay. Well located, the best breakfast of the trip, free internet, laundry room and free parking on the street behind the hotel. The restaurant which has separate ownership is also very good.

Bacharach am Rhein

We found very reasonable rooms at Pension Winzerhaus. Cheap 47 Euros but very clean with a good breakfast. They speak English. http://www.bensbauernhof.com/winzerhausbacharach.html

We stayed at a B&B in Fussen that went by the name of L.A. House. Price was right and we got an entire attic floor for 4 of us. Breakfast was catered to the room. As I recall it was 100 Euro a night. Also stayed at a Pension in Innsbruck that was better than our expectations. Again the room was large enough to accommodate 4 and came with a nice breakfast. Also economical and close to same rate. I still have the postcard from the place so will edit and add name. Both places were in quiet neighborhoods and allowed for easy safe parking. In Melk, Austria we stayed at the Hotel Zum Post which was a nice old style traditional small hotel. Again nice included breakfast buffet meal. Price not that much more than the others but had to book two rooms for the four of us. Street parking allowed until early mid morning. Just blocks away from the Stift Melk Monastary and its spacious parking so a great place to stay if the Monastary is on your schedule. Best recollection is that we found each of these places through tripadvisor.com.

We stayed in a bunch of hotels outside of Munich during our recent ED trip - here's a quick braindump:

Rothenburg odT - Hotel Hornburg - http://www.hotel-hornburg.de/ - Real nice owners, free parking 50ft from the front door (I could see my car from the window of the room). Hotel is located just outside the old city wall.

Baden-Baden - Hotel Rebenhof - http://www.hotel-rebenhof.de/ - Actually about 6-7 miles outside of Baden-Baden, right in the middle of the vineyards. Beautiful views, nice room, free, safe parking.

Meersburg (am Bodensee) - Hotel Baeren - http://www.baeren-meersburg.de/ - historical hotel right in the heart of Meersburg. Private parking garage (~6 euros a night) - a bit of a tight squeeze, but your car will be safe. Location is great.

Neuschwanstein-area - Reutte (just over the border in Austria) - Hotel Maximilian - http://www.maxihotel.com - 10 minute walk to downtown Reutte. Free parking right outside the hotel. Less touristy than Füssen. Comfortable rooms, nice restaurant, very friendly staff.

Salzburg - Hotel Rosenvilla - http://www.rosenvilla.com/ - 15 minute walk to the Old town - free parking right outside the hotel - really nice rooms (more like a small boutique hotel), great breakfast.

All of these hotels, with the exception of Rosenvilla, came in around 90-100 Euros a night, including breakfast. Hotel Rosenvilla was about 30-40 Euros more than that.

I make reservations directly with Rosenvilla and Baeren, and the rest of the above were booked through booking.com, which came up with the most competitive rate. A few other sites had the same rooms for a couple of Euros more per night.

In Munich, we took advantage of the Kings First Class deal through BMW at the start of our trip. We stayed Saturday and Sunday night - Sunday night was free, you only had to pay for breakfast. This worked out great - the location is very convenient to the city. For our last night, we stayed in Le Meridien, booked through priceline.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn City Center for 2 nights and would recommend it. Paid $235 (at 1.58 $ to Euro conversion) per night through Priceline.

Room was a bit small for american standards, but the bathroom was great. Decent hotel bar in the lobby.

The best feature is that the hotel is connected to the S-Bahn station Rosenheimer Platz. So you can take the S8 directly from the airport (E10.80), get off at Roseheimer Platz, and follow the Holiday Inn signs to the hotel lobby. Getting to the Welt also is a breeze bugetting on the S-bahn at Rosenheimer Platz and then changing to the U3 in MarienPlatz. You can even take the train back from Harm, but it is a long walk to the station (U6 Garching-Hochbruk) and I would not recommend it if you have luggage.
Apparently secure car parking is available at the hotel for E17. But, I did not use it.

Grand Hotel Imperiale-Moltrasio (Lake Como), Italy.

Why?
-It is on the right side of the lake for an approach from Munich. Therefore minimal driving on those harrowing Lake Como frontage roads.
- It has excellent covered parking garage. Hard to find in Italy, IME.
-The staff is super-polite and easy to work with.
-The convenience to the Lake Como ferry... their dock is right across the street.

The following are all hotels that we just stayed out thanks to the recommendations of everyone here and I fully recommend them.

Munich - Sheraton Arabella Grand Hotel Munchen ($184 a night) & Le Meridien ($243 a night) - I actually liked the Sheraton room better (upgrade to a Bavarian room, it was gorgeous) but am sitting in Le Meridien as I write this and do prefer the location.

Lindau - Bayerischer Hof ($275 a night) - Fabulous hotel with a great location, it is the best bargain we had on the trip. A grand hotel for less than 200 Euros a night. Great breakfast.

Hohenschwangau - Hotel Muller ($204 a night) - a nice hotel with a great location and views of the castle

Salzburg - Hotel Goldener Hirsch ($267 a night) - and incredible hotel with an unbelievable location. This is the second Starwood Luxury Collection hotel we have stayed at in Europe and another unbelievable experience

Prague - Andel's Hotel Prague ($179 a night) - Modern, 10 minutes to downtown via subways, across the street from a mall. Easy to drive into and out of (parking is $43 a night in their secure garage. Good breakfast buffet.

Regensburg - Marriott Courtyard ($148 a night) - I would recommend this one the least, a ways from downtown and you get exactly what you would expect.

Rothenburg - Hotel Gerberhaus - Fantastic hotel with a great courtyard in back next to the city wall.

While none have been visited while doing ED, they're probably still useful. The only thing lacking would be detailed parking report. I tend to focus on the small family owned hotels and Gasthauses (i.e. no chain hotels or ritzy places).

Munich -
Hotel Asam (http://www.hotel-asam.de): great small hotel in the heart of munich (5 minute walk from the Marienplatz or U-Bahn), underground parking is available but tight, nice ammenities available like sauna, heated bathroom floors, suites, hotel bar.

Acanthus Hotel (http://www.acanthushotel.de/); a bit cheaper than the Asam and a bit further from the Marienplatz but still within the Altstadt, underground parking available (steep ramp though), breakfast included, American owner (from Portland, OR), rooms are decent but nothing spectacular

Vienna -
Pension Aviano (http://www.secrethomes.at/) - in the heart of the city, just off of Kärtnerstraße and less than 5 minutes to the Stephansdom, public parking, breakfast included.

Berctesgadenerland -
Hotel Neu Meran (http://www.hotel-neu-meran.de/) in Bad Reichenhall - spa hotel that is a destination all it self, secluded location, great views, great restaurant, 30 minute walk to Bad Reichenhall's Bahnhof, indoor sauna, pool, solarium, outdoor terrace and activies, breakfast included, parking available

Rothenberg o.d. Tauber -
Hotel Reichsküchenmeister (http://www.reichskuechenmeister.com/)- excellent location right off of Kirchplatz, remote parking available

Garmisch-Partenkirchen -
Gasthof Fraundorfer/ (http://www.gasthof-fraundorfer.de/) - quintessential Gasthaus, but is frequented by American service members and vacationers, breakfast included, parking included, great restaurant with live music

Thats it for now, I'll add more as I remember details

+1 recommendation for Uhland. Great location, charming neighborhood, reasonable prices.

Nurburgring
Hotel Wilhelmshoehe: http://www.hotel-wilhelmshoehe.de/
British owner, clean rooms, expansive breakfast buffet, relaxing garden/grounds, excellent kitchen, reasonable prices - caters to Ring enthusiasts and profesionals.

Lake Como
Albergo Lenno in Lenno: www.albergolenno.com/inglese
Classy hotel located on the promenade, pool, indoor parking and breakfast buffet. Picture perfect setting right next to the vaporetto station, walk to restaurants.

Manarola, Cinque Terre
Hotel Baranin: www.baranin.com
Pay the extra E10 for the room with view, it is absolutely worth it. Situated close to the town parking lot, up on the hill which makes taking luggage in a breeze. Amazing view, excellent breakfast, warm people. Manarola is a little less touristy than Vernazza and quieter at night.

Provence, Luberon
Hostellerie des Commandeurs in Joucas: www.lescommandeurs.com
Low prices, breakfast, pool, ask for a Southward-facing room (cote sud). In the summer, your room will smell of fresh lavender. At least one night, put your name on the dinner list - if you want a little taste of authentic cuisine provencale. Nice location in picture-perfect sleepy little village, great for exploring the Luberon region. Fold your mirrors if coming in from the SW. :)

This is a GREAT idea for a permanent thread/website....but why stop with hotels/motels?? Why not start a list of great places to eat in the cities that people visit....when the list is full, maybe create a .pdf file that folks can print and take wit them...

Of course, if the hotels (and eventual dining places) have websites, it might be good to have folks occasionally check them to be sure that the links still work...

Just a thought...

Cheers,
