I am hoping that the proportions and lines differ drastically from what I hope is a very unrepresentative mule.

I agree, there is nothing special about this design. It looks like it was designed in Japan or Korea.

Something tells me that isn't going to be a Z4.
I love the proportions, it's the details I fear they won't get right (like the current model).
It's entirely possible, if all goes well and I really like it, I'll be back in another Z4 - next generation.

The new mule disguising trend is to rivet lots of fiberglass on things, so I doubt that it's quite that bulbuous in the rear. That said, it is likely to have a tall front grill and nose to accomodate those ridiculous new EU pedestrian safety laws.
It looks to have a retractible hard-top to me - the secondary side windows and big rear glass hint of that, although that could be a removable hard top fitted for winter.
Still, the secondary side windows make me think it will have a longer wheelbase than the existing Z4, and will be a larger car overall. Probably halfway between the Z4 and the current MB SL.
:bigpimp:Wild-ass Predictions:
New name - they will retire the Z4 name, just like they did the Z3. Z5 or Z9 will be the name.
Base engine (US anyway) will be the latest variant of the N54 twin turbo. ROW will always get some dinky little two liter. Outside chance of some sort of diesel turbo.
BMW will steadfastly deny any intentions to build an M version, until it debuts at an autoshow in late 2011. It will have the S65 V8, but everyone will still bitch and moan because by then the M3 will have (announced, anyway) a twin-turbo V8. And the new MZ will never get that engine.

Interesting. That car seems as big, if not a little bigger than the current Z4. The usually reliable information I've gotten was that the next Z would move down market, in size as well as price.
Interesting pics. Even w/the heavy 'cladding' the car looks longer. I'm hoping the new model will receive significant updates forward the front axle.
my eyes hurt when i look into "masked" cars.. also i'm not too excited to see the next generation Z coz i still wanna enjoy mine :p and i don't think i'll ever get a Z again!
i wonder what i'd get after the M, definitely not a Z but could it be a non bimmer after 11 years with BMW (E36 325i, E46 330Ci & a Z4MC)

There are supposdly two Zed cars coming. The one pictured above looks to be the Z9 - a high-end MBZ SL competitor with folding top. The other, rumored to be the Z2, will be smaller than the Z4 (probably based on the 1-series platform).

That was my understanding as well. But my understanding was that the Z2 would significantly shorter than the current Z4 (6-8 in), and that the Z9 would be 6er sized (or even bigger), and would attempt to be the end-all, be-all BMW supercar.
Tough to tell much from those pics, but size-wise it looks like neither a Z2 or Z9.

With a folding hardtop (if the rumor holds true) it could be a Z4, but never an M (unless it's M for Mercedes).
These are the first pics with the tail lights showing. Looks like they came from the 6 series....

I love the new 6 series LED tail and head lights... on the 6ers. Wait for the true reveal on the Z9.

I have heard unconfirmed rumors that you can still enjoy your car after a new model comes out.
Mine's turning 100k in just a few weeks, and good as ever!

New M versions can put a lot of stress on that theory.

Halfway through is an artist's rendition of the Z4. I've scoured the web for information and from what I understand it's fairly close. That thing looks phenomenal. None of the hate or love it styling of the current zed.

Agreed - that hood line looks like someone is popping a package of microwave popcorn beneath it. The new Benz SL has the Euro Big Nose as well - as if the cover slammed down while the mechanic was still leaning over the engine. Wouldn't it be easier to just not walk in front of moving cars in the first place?

Am I mistaken? Was this picture already debated here ad nausea um and debunked before on these forums or are sarcastic comments the flavor du jour around here? I'd really like to know as I haven't spent too much time on this board.

LOL, certainly didn't go that way with the M5 or M3! I'd rather have my E39 or an E34 M5 than an E60, and I'd easily pick an E30 or E36 M3 over the E92. They are much more rewarding to the driver than the newest versions.

I don't have links, but I've been watching pretty closely for the last year, reading everything I can.
It looks like the retractable hardtop's a given and the size is a bit larger.
From the pics, it would appear there's a bit more presence to the rear end (the weakest aspect of the current design, imo).
At any rate, there had been a lot of speculation these pics might be of the Z9, but that was confirmed by most outlets as untrue - it is in fact, the forthcoming Z4

Sorry if the guys offended you. That photoshop has been kicking around on the Z4 forums for over a year. It's a pretty poor photoshop of the CS concept body with Z8 accents with some elements swiped wholesale from the Z4 (note the roll bars and mirrors). It resembles the next generation Z in that it will also likely be a 4-wheeled vehicle with a BMW logo on it, but it doesn't come much closer than that. :)

Ah. Bummer. Thing looks super nice. And no I wasn't offended. The impression I got was exactly what you stated. That it was old news or some such :). Thanks though!
