hmm... yeah? not that difficult to add vanos to a non vanos? or do u just swap over to a 93 vanos obd1 harness for the s52?
my DD is a 97 M3, but I do have a 96 s52 avail to me and i am converting my touring to 5mt this week, somwhere said that the 5mt from a 1992 525i manual (the trans im putting in from my donor car) is the sane as the earlier M3 (1995)?
Also that the diff on 525i or ia is same 3.23 as obd2 e36m 3.23?
shoot. that makes the touring really really similar to my M3, i should just turbo kit it and have a NA vs boost self war.

You have to change everything to OBDI. I used a 93 525i engine vanos engine harness, the original 92 525iT exhaust manifolds, intake manifold, throttle body, airbox, valve cover, 95 M3 DME w/EWS Delete Turner chip, 95 M3 coils, the 96 S52 stock injectors, new knock sensors, vanos solenoid (E36 M3 won't work because lead too short), new crank and cam sensors, 525i oil pan and new oil pickup, etc. I stuck with the factory automatic, but a reman unit, which all bolted up fine, a new Portland reman driveshaft and kept the original 4:11 Touring rear end. At 80mph on cruise control, 3100rpm, I get 33 mpg. Not bad. The cars not as fast as a factory E36 M3 because of the extra weight but it makes a great dog hauler and has suprised many a rice burner. It's also lowered with H&R springs on the front (rear hydraulic suspension just adjusted down to match), 540i brakes, Euro M5T sway bars, Euro smiley headlights, Euro M5 instrument cluster (modified), 99 E36 3-spoke steering wheel, E32 front seats, Euro M5 staggered forged wheels, M5 bumper covers and rocker panels. I'm ready for paint sometime in the next few months. I did the swap in Jun of 2006 and have about 7k miles on it since with absolutely no problems.

a 5 speed, diff, pedal box, driveshaft shifter etc...
a 5 speed swap, the s52 exceeds the torque rating of the tranny.
it'll probably die a quick death if you do not, plus your s52 ecm probably won;t talk to the TCU since it will have a manual chip.
One day I hope to swap an S52 shortblock under my NV head...

I looked around and saw 236 lb/ft for the S52.
The GM 4L30E should handle 240 lb/ft (I do not remember where I found it). I'm not trying to say that the extra torque would not hasten the transmissions death.

310 N/m is... a4s'310' is the rated torque. 228 ft.lbs.
And as we all know they handle less as they age and under heavy load. Tourings are always under an extra 400+ lbs of load.

As I mentioned above, my automatic has been behind the S52 for almost two years and still doesn't have any problems. Now I don't dog it either because I don't really see the point when the S52 is in the heavier Touring anyway. I think my replacement automatic was from a 93 525i and my stock 92 525i TCU wouldn't work with it (trans lite) but once I found the proper matching TCU it's been shifting fine ever since. I originally decided to stay with the automatic because I was going to do the 5-speed swap later on but have since decided to stick with the auto since it's not having any problems.

Some people are lucky... and some people (me) couldn't catch a break if it landed in their lap.
