Custom tags with PCD

Hey folks,

I'd like to get a custom tag for my car. I'm curious as to how this process works. From what I understand, the dealer sends my paperwork to my local DMV. From there, do I register the car and request the tag before I take delivery of it or after? If after, do I just drive up with temp plates that you guys provide? If before, do I have the bring the tags down with me?

I'm planning on an ED and re-delivery at PCD. As I understand it, you get Temp Tags (paper) for transit of your car from PCD back to your home state. Either your selling dealer will provide the temp tags, or like here in AZ, I can print them from the DMV website. Once you have the car locally, I think your dealer will take car of the registration and plates. Except for guys like me that are using an out of state selling dealer (Board Sponsor); I probably need to go to the DMV myself :(

Here in Texas, you can request custom plates whenever you like on-line. When they're ready, you head over to your local tax collector assessor's office and associate them with a particular vehicle.

I suppose you could do the whole thing at once, if you had the custom plates, bill of sale, and the BMW certificate of origin in hand?

In SC, you have to get a regular plate (which the dealer will handle for you) and then apply for a custom plate. When the custom plate arrives, you turn in the original plate. I'm sure different states have different processes - check with your local DMV.
