View Full Version : Got too much primer in my rock chip, advice on how to proceed?

I'm fixing a rock chip which had started to rust. By the time I'd sanded it sufficiently to remove the rust, I had a 1/4" circular spot of metal showing.
I've primed it using a primer pen, but the only way I could get it to go on there without drying on contact was to use a thick coat.
I expect I need to sand some of the primer down, but don't know what grade sandpaper to use, or how to go about this so I don't either remove all the primer or scuff up the surrounding paint too much.
Any help or tips would be much appreciated.

Just to clarify - I haven't put any paint on it yet, it's still just primer.

You could get a new yellow pencil like we used to use in school. Cut little circles out of 220 grit emery paper and glue them onto the eraser.
Twirl the pencil on the primer until you've sanded it down below the surface. Use a magnifying glass if you have to. Go slow, remove dust by blowing or a small bristle brush.
Now that you already have primer in the spot, a thinned application of primer could build the area up if you sand off too much.
i used a toothpick to apply paint for my chipwork.

Thanks guys...
I have another probably stupid question.
The car got damp overnight from dew, since primer is porous, do I have anything to worry about before I put the topcoat on today? I plan on letting it sit in the sun for a few hours, but will it have trapped moisture in there?
I have no idea how waterproof primer is by itself. The one I used is not water based if it's relevant.

Frank,
You've done it again. You've made me laugh like a little schoolgirl. My sides hurt, i feel giddy from all the laughter.
You did the same thing to me about a year ago with another very clever response. Dry, witty, trenchant, pithy, succinct. What's not to giggle at and admire?
If you're ever in the Victoria area I owe you two thirst quenching beverages.
Thanks for the giggles, and well done.
Taymar,
Since it's moist from dew only, I'd put money on the fact you're going to be fine. I'd hit it with a llittle cool/warm air from a blowdryer then move ahead with the paint.
