My 1994 E36 : The rear speakers are mounted in boxes (left and right) just above the rear shocks. Each box holds a tweeter and a 3.5" driver.
My 97 E36: The rear speakers are mounted in a different housing that does indeed hold the larger driver previously mentioned, and same tweeter as older model.
The cut-out on the rear deck is not round or oval. It was designed to hold the box and expose the two drivers I mentioned above. I found an adaptor on E-bay motors which allows the use of a 6x9 for the rear deck. Forget about going to best buy to find good sound, if that is what you want.

I have 2 amps since the speakers are pre-amped and to avoid wiring the doors, I just took an RCA cable to my 6 1/4 in the rear and added a 12" sub. it sounds decent in the trunk with the seats up but sounds better in the back seat if you're not worried about getting it stolen
