hi everyone! my 1984 528e has a slipping transmission.:bawling: haven't gotten it estimated yet.
with about 220,00 miles on the car, is it worth repairing? my plan was to restore it and keep it forever.
i have a great mechanic but they don't do transmissions. any recommendations for a tranny repair shop near hawthorne, ca? has anyone any experience with T1 Transmissions in Gardena?

I don't live in your area but your tranny lasted more than expected! You car is an '84 so I don't know if you've got the 3HP22 or the 4HP22 tranny. I had a 1985 325e with the 4HP22 and they had a factory defect that kept the forward clutch pack pressurized (you felt it when you left the car in Park or Neutral and revved it, it actually tried to move!) so there was a "retrofit" package for them (I think it just involved adding a pressure bleed off valve). Anyway you do it, these tranny's don't like to be revved in Park or Neutral so keep that in mind.

Good Luck!

I have an automatic 1985 525e with 285,000 miles on it and all the gears work fine except the 4th gear, which rattles the entire car if it shifts into it too early. At higher RPMs, the gear does not stick or rattle, but the car seems to be shifting into it too early.

Why would 4th gear make my entire car rattle massively unless I hit the accelerator to downshift? Remember, this is the original transmission, has never been rebuilt, and all the other three gears shift perfectly.

At this point it time ot might do more harm than good but have you changed the transmission oil and filter? It is supposed to be changed every 50,000 miles. Check the fluid and see if it is dark and smells burned. If it is you have two options: do a service (oil and filter) and see if it gets better or just bite the bullet and get it serviced.

Good Luck!
