View Full Version : Speeding ticket - good advice?
I got caught doing 93 where is could do 65 in New Jersey. Normally drive very nicely and safely and I have never gotten a ticket before. The car was warm and I gave it some speed for 3 minutes and just before I was about to turn off the highway I got caught . Any advice?
Thank!

That stinks man!
Since you got caught in NJ, there is going to be a whole bunch of NJ lawyers contacting you by mail offering to help you get out of the ticket (for a fee, of course). Plus, any tickets for going over 85MPH in a 65MPH area will be double fines, or about $300.
If you live in NJ then it might be worth fighting it to avoid the points. If you don't, unless they changed this, the points would not show up on your state's license (another reason why I usually don't speed in my own state), so I would consider just paying the fine. Only if your time is not too valuable, or the lawyer's fees are not too high does it make sense to fight it at that point, IMO.
Have fun.

Check to see whether the County you were charged has traffic school in lieu of paying the traffic fine. Considering that this is your first offense, if such thing exits, you should be able to erase this from your driving record. If not, contest the ticket. You should be able to settle for a reduce speed fine or cop may not show up (if you are lucky!)
Good luck! Get a good detector like Valentine 1.

I can only agree and I really try to drive safe and not too fast but I know that is not an excuse.

I live in New York and have a NYS license. I am most worried any possible insurance hike but according to this site http://www.redlichlaw.com/traffic/new-jersey-speeding-tickets.html:
"New York drivers should not be affected - New York does not recognize out-of-state tickets (except, strangely, from Ontario and Quebec) and they do not appear on a NY driving record. Many other states recognize out-of-state tickets, and they do affect insurance."

You might check to see if NJ has deferred adjudication, that's what we call it in Tx.
It turns a speeding ticket into a speeding tax . You see the Judge, pay the tax, the city, county, or state gets their revenue and nothing goes on your record.
My son uses this at least once a year. I keep telling him to get a radar detector.
I use an Escort Passport 8500, old but VERY dependable  haven't been to see the Judge or driving school in years.

As long as you take care of this matter in a timely fashion, it should not have any effect on your NYS Motor Vehicle Report. Your insurance would not be affected. The key is to determine the time in which you have to answer the ticket. Sometimes it may say to call the court, and not have a specific date on the ticket. The suggestions of a traffic course, or other type of reduction of charges are good as well. When it comes right down to it, they just want their money. I got a ticket in NYS for 85 in a 65 and got it reduced to a very expensive parking ticket. A lawyer, and a defensive driver course did the trick for me. Good luck, and don't let this sit.
