View Full Version : E39 rear window regulator repair kit available

OK,
Since my post about my repair of the rear window regulator over at bimmerforums it was suggested that I post here so that inexpensive fix could be spread across the E39 community.
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=860874
I've been asked if I could produce the parts to make the repair. I've torn apart my good door to get measurements and have everything ready to go to make repair kits available for those of you that are interested. These parts will be nice, not like what are pictured in my original repair.
The repair kit will include parts to repair 2 rear window regulators for the typical broken slider problem. The kit will include the repair parts, nuts, bolts, proper drill bit, hex key, and instructions with pictures. All you will need are basic hand tools and a drill. To keep from having to print a lot of stuff I plan to send the instructions by email so be aware.
I'm not planning on getting rich here just helping other E39 owners with what is a common and expensive repair. Oh yeah, the price is $15 shipped in the US. I know sticker shock.... and I can take PayPal if it makes things easier.
These parts will only fit the rear regulators not the front.
If you are interested send me a PM and I'll hook you up, if this post breaks the rules delete it and you have my apology.
Thanks,
Lance
Bump for a good guy, and to fix his link. I have no idea why yours isn't working:

Not yet, first shipment goes out Monday. I have used it myself successfully and I recommend as preventive maintaince to prevent the failure from happening and leaving you with a window inop.

Bump for Lance!!!!!!! You could also consider this preventive maintanence, because with the huge failure rate on the regulators its more of a when not an if.
Thanks Lance for posting it here, you have my order buddy.

Lance, you sound like a great guy to do this without trying to fleece everyone on the cost.
I replaced both rear regulators in 2007 and anticipate that the fronts might go (not sure if the previous owner replaced them or not). Put me on the list for the fronts if you get that finalized. I'd buy a set just to have on hand for when they eventually go.
Many thanks,
Ray (Raymond919@aol.com)

Thanks Ray,
Really the fleece is there, it's just that it's reasonable :)
Actually it's just that I've been doing stuff like this all my life at work and have a pretty nice shop setup at home that makes doing things like this pretty easy. Once you get the fixtures made it's sort of mass production time, so it's not like I'm spending hours making up each kit. I'm just lucky to have sources for material and experience doing things just like this that keeps the fleece reasonable and profitable enough for me to produce them. Of course then I keep thinking 100,000 + E39's produced times $15....... Wow sort of like hitting the lotto :)
Lance
Very clever.
I did the same thing on my E23 (sold) 1983 735i, FRONT driver's regulator.
The motor is made by Bosch (or ? Siemens) but the only thing broken was the same clip, so I made something similar and it worked great until I sold the car.
When people say regulator is broken in a bimmer, usually this is the culprit, NOT the motor itself.
Very clever!

I didn't know about this solution last year when I paid big bucks to self repair (replace) my right rear window regulator. Yesterday, my left rear window did the same thing, so I would like to purchase your kit to fix this nagging problem. You mentioned that the purchase can by made via Pay Pal. If you wish to use Pay Pal, then I need your ID to initiate the transaction. Thanks in advance for posting this valuable alternative for the community.

If this offer is still available (looks to be, as it was posted just a short while ago) I think I need to take you up on it. Drivers rear dropped this weekend... JB weld just didn't hold up last time. If you could e-mail me directly (see e-mail below ) I'll arrange getting you payment asap.

I'm hoping that someone will come up with a broken front regulator that they will send me. I don't want to tear into my car just to see what it would take as I need it going as my main vehicle right now. So if someone has a front regulator laying around let me know and we'll work something out, till I get one .....

Drivers side rear window failed to go up or down - pressing the swtich activates the motor which remains on until the opposite direction on the switch is chosen.
Took the door panel off and the glass was wedged in the shut position with a piece of wood!!!!!
If this kit will solve the problem then please put me down for 1 set.

I'm afraid that you may be past fixing that regulator, look and see if the cable is still there. I think that with the motor running until the other direction is selected means that the cable is broken, if it is broken this repair kit won't fix it. :(

Lance - You Rock! It took me roughly 4 hours to complete both windows. There was a little sanding and quite a bit of adjusting due to the metal getting tweeked, but the end result was perfect. Seriously, every E39 owner should know about this, because its a matter of when, not if!
Thanks!

I have no idea of the exact cut off when the rear window regulators were improved, but my car was built in May 2001, and had one rear window regulator replaced in 2002 or 2003. This kit will NOT fit the rear window regulators on my car. I should have taken a picture, but the area where it would go has been redesigned to eliminate the weak point (now made from aluminum, not plastic, and designed differently). I had a BMW tech attempt to install them today and he showed me the difference, and we compared with the photos in the installation instructions, they are very different!
So I asked him why I had one fail anyway, and he said there are still plenty of other plastic parts in there that crack and fail, including the spool the cable winds on. Oh well. I gave the kits to my tech, as he owns a 99 540, so they should fit on his car, and he has a broken one right now. ;) He said even with his discount, those rear regulators are about $150 to $170 each. He said the normal customer price is over $300!
Lancem
06-25-2008, 12:29 PM
Thanks for the info! I did some looking on realoem and it appears that 3/99 may be the change over to a new regulator. This was the first that I've heard of a difference, wish you would have taken a pic so we could see the difference. I'll make a note that this kit only works on pre 3/99 vehicles.

Lance, Thanks for developing this window repair kit. I fixed the window on my '97 528i yesterday, and it works-just like a real window!
The original window slide on mine was bent and twisted, but after some filing with a Dremel, your kit fit, and it worked great.
I did find that the larger Torx bolt on my window was a #30, and I used a 2" wide plaster spatula to pop off the door panel-it worked more easily than a flat blade screwdriver.
Thanks again, your kit saved me a lot of money.
Ray
PS Glad you like the Barbera Red on my 335i

I spent about n hour pulling the whole door apart, I leave for two seconds and my friend decides to take over on this project and pulls the motor off the regulator then a spring popped out and there went the whole project, there's no avoiding getting a regulator now. There's a guy over here that gives you 50 bucks for your old one, and charges 100 for a refurbished one with reinforced cables and such. I'm going to go that route, I tried Lance.

Spent over $400 on the right door to have dealer replace the regulator. Now left has gone bad. It looked like the cable was bad on the right door. Not sure if the left is the same - but could this be more of a problem than your kit solves. Thanks for your help.

Bluewheeler,
If the cable is broken then it is past what my kit can repair, if the cable nut has broken free from the window slide then then that can be taken care of with the repair kit.

OK,
Since my post about my repair of the rear window regulator over at bimmerforums it was suggested that I post here so that inexpensive fix could be spread across the E39 community.
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=860874
Thanks,
Lance
I'd like to purchase this repair kit. What can I do to get this ASAP? My 528 regulaltor has been broken and the dealer wants about $380.00 just for the part. Since I've been laid off I need to pull my wrenches and start doing my own repairs.

Ok for those of you who have made this repair. I have a question. I know that I definitely need to replace the whole regulator on my 2000 528i because the regulator cable is jammed up in the wheel and the slider is bent (among other things); however, I can't get my old regulator out. The top pulley, located behind the soft plastic and window glass, is attached with a torx bolt (T25-T30?). I tried to take a picture of it but couldn't get anything decent through the dirty plastic. There is only about a 1/4 inch of clearance between the glass and the bolt head, so how am I supposed to get a torx head in there? Anyone have the same problem? I am at a loss of how to take this thing out. Also, my dealer only supplies the regulator with attached motor for $346. Where did you guys find just the regulator, or if someone already bought one for the back right window and wants to fix the bracket with Lance's jig, I would be interested in purchasing it from you at a discount. I have the window taped for now, but that isn't going to do for long. Please help.

How can I know if it is the nut or the cable? My right rear window, wouldnt come back up, I hear the motor running, and a thud when the glass should have reached the top, and again when it should reach the bottom... Dealer wants 450$ installed for a new regulator.....
Lancem
04-21-2009, 03:18 AM
Typically if the cable breaks or comes off the pulleys things get bound up and will stall the motor out, since you can hear the motor running and the nut hitting top and bottom I'd say the nut has torn loose from the slider. The only real way to tell is to open the door pannel up and take a look. Take a look at the photo instructions and the videos at my site to see what you'll be looking for, www.bmwrepairkit.com

So this kit fixs the little metal piece of metal that broke off the regulator that holds up the window?
Lancem
04-24-2009, 03:18 PM
EroticDrea,
Yes, around the wire nut that is captured on the slider (as I call it) the metal bends and/or breaks away, freeing the wire nut and so then the window slides freely up and down with no control. The repair part captures the wire nut in the correct position and keeps it there with a nut and bolt, a permanent fix. There are photo instructions and install videos on my website, www.bmwrepairkit.com that will show you exactly what is in the kit and how it repairs the regulator. Bimmerfest members get the kit for $15 shipped, drop me a PM for ordering information if you are interested.

I have made several repairs over the years to my 97 528i for rear driver side window. This time the cable, which is still intact came off of the plastic wheels (track). Can I get the cable back onto the track? How? I have played with it for a short time and stopped to ask this question. Should I just plan on replacing it all?
Lancem
05-08-2009, 01:28 PM
Stuart,
I'm working with a regulator out of the car so what I'm going to decribe may be best seen with it out of the car.
There are the two black plastic coated cable housings coming from the motor. At the motor end there is a spring on each one which tensions the housing. At the regulator end choose one of the housings and pull it straight out of the regulator doing so will take all of the tension out of the cable, string the cable as required to get it back to normal then making sure the cable housing is in it's holder at the motor end compress the spring and reinsert the housing at the regulator end, this will retension the cable and all should be good to go.
Hope this helps,
Lance

05-11-2009, 05:23 AM
Lance: Thank you very much. The regulator is still in the vehicle and even after I got it back into place using your instructions I noticed that the protective cable covering had come off one of the regulator ends. I also noticed that the plastic regulator wheel at the top had been nicked and cut in several places by the cable. I tried placing it back into the slot and around the cable but the cable remained loose. I feel certain it will slip out again. SO I bit the bullet and ebayed a new regulator. Viewing the videos I feel pretty good I can remove the glass from the car and replace the regulator if I have to. How hard would it be NOT to remove the glass and remove and then replace the top nut (10MM) holding the regulator? The motor works fine.
How do you remove the old regulator from the motor. Is it just couple of screws attaching them together?
Thanks
Lancem
05-11-2009, 04:19 PM
People have removed the regulator without removing the glass but I think it's a lot tougher than taking the glass out. I'm pretty sure all you have to do to remove the motor is take out 4 screws and it pulls right out.

Lance: Job is done w/new regulator installed. I did remove the window but the 10mm bolt at the top CAN EASILY BE REMOVED with the window still in place in the UP position. The problem is once you remove it and take the regulator out RESTARTING the bolt is very difficult with the window in the door.
The old MOTOR (which I reused) came undone from the old regulator with 5 screws and was easy to reattach.
Thanks for your help.
JOB DONE
The '98 540i has broken both its rear window regulators, the first one long ago the second one last year (in the CCA corral at the Monterey Historics as we were loading up to head to the hotel...) and I wish I'd found this then.
The '00 M5 right rear window is making the same clicking noise the '98 did (in large measure, no doubt, because our three-year-old now has control of her own window) and I'm assuming the failure is going to be similar. The part # changed midyear '99 - anyone able to tell me how different the new unit is?
Lance, do you have parts for the later ones?
Thanks.

I've got a 528 with both rear window regulators broken. I'd love to get a hold of one of you kits if they are still available.
Thanks,

Hi Lance M,
I finished the repair on both my rear E39 window regulators and they work great now. I would like to mention that when I initially installed them the extra metal added to the slider by the kit rubbed against the door pillar. I didn't want to remove them and sand the pillar as suggested, so instead i pullled on the regulator track to create more space between it and the pillar and after about 5 minutes of bending it out the window moved up and down smoothly with no hesitation. Thanks for the kit:)

I'd like to purchase a kit. How do I do so?
Also the cables have come off the pulleys in the regulator. Any info on how to properly re-route them?
Thanks!

PM sent on order info, To redue the cable, once you have the regulator out of the car you will see the 2 plastic cable housings that run betweent he motor and the regulator, pull one of them out of the regulator, that will give you the slack you need in the cable to restring the regulator. Once you have the cable restrung, push back on the housing you disconnected to compress the spring at the motor end and get the housing back into the regulator, this will retension the cable and you should be good to go.

Does anyone have instructions on how to route the cables in the regulator? I've got the kit to fix the issue, but the cable has come off all the pulleys and I can't figure out how to get them back on. I haven't been able to fine a good picture or instructions anywhere either.

I'd send you some pics but I'm in Korea this week... To get slack in the cables so you can restring it take and remove one of the plastic coated cable housings from the regulator, they run between the motor and the regulator. This will allow you to restring the cable and then when you are ready push the housing against the spring at the motor end and put the other end back into the regulator.

I have started a thread here, that I never finished... :(
But it has many pictures and you can see how to reassemble the regulator back together. I did this 2 years ago and it is still good. (touch wood... !!!).
It will be much easier for you if you have another pair of hands to help you. You need somebody with strong hands. You need to squeeze the spring all the way in when you put that together. But in the end, my friend did not help me good enough, and I did it by myself on my kitchen table. You'll need to have very strong fingers...
Anyway, here is the link: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2572558#post2572558
Good luck,

Hi Sam,
Sorry the kit only works on cars manufacutred up to 6/99, a different regulator was used after that date and my kit won`t fix it.

Sam siu, I haven´t had time to put up pics on my site showing the differances between the old and new regulator, but I sugest going to my site and looking at the photo in the instructions then pulling your inner door panel off and looking at the regulator. If it is the same you are good to go. The regulators look a lot different so you should be able to tell if you have a new or old. my site is www.bmwrepairkit.com

Lance,Thanks for your reply.I found out it is newer regulator. Do you know how I remove the top bolt of the regulator so I can replace the whole unit.Is it through the hole in the glass? but i can't get them to line up.

You'll have to remove the glass, follow the instructions on my site, the only difference between your car and the one in the instructions is the newer regulator.

OK,
Since my post about my repair of the rear window regulator over at bimmerforums it was suggested that I post here so that inexpensive fix could be spread across the E39 community.
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=860874
Thanks,
Lance
Hello Lance, I think I need one of these. My left rear windows is off about 1/2 inch from the top. Please advise.

I watched the youtube video and it seemed as if you could see the parts that need to be combined in the kit. Is it not possible to complete the repair with the regulator in place? Maybee slide a wood block behind it to do the drilling. This would obviously leave little room to tighten the nut but it looked doable in the video.

You can give it a try but I've never had anyone tell me that they did it in the door. I think once you get the door opened up you'll be able to decide better.
PM sent with the info.
