Low oil pressure? Check the oil level first!

Hm..."Spot on" is usually UK slang for "exactly correct", so sounds like the OP's friend has checked the oil.

Possibly the oil level sensor? It seems to me some BMW posters have reported dodgy sensors. Might be worth a check to see if the Evo engine has this issue? :dunno:

Good luck mate.

my m3 evo does this as well. it flashes 9 times exactly everytime i start.it is nerve wrecking to see an oil light flash. ive had the car for over 5 months since i bought it and its always done this. i checked oil on many occasions and its fine. a mate of mine thinks it could be oil pumping into the engine as a precautionary? dont think thats true. any help will be appreciated.

Unless you have added an oil pressure gauge, you can't tell what the exact pressure is. BMW oil pressure lights are set ridiculously low. If it comes on you better see it and react immediately. I would probably try to check the pressure or check/replace the pump. Unfortuantely, 3.2s don't have cheap oil pumps.

i have a 1996 m3 evo 3.2 :D

i was at my local bmw specialist today (paddock garage just outside of exeter) having rear break pads and sensors fitted along with having the handbrake cable done and brake footpedal switch replaced!! anyway i have only just bought the car a week ago and i love it to bits!! its absolutly gorgeous packed with ac schnitzer parts!!...:D
on the day after i bought the car it overheated and lucky i noticed the temp geting high and switched it off before it got dangerously hot!! paddock garage (specialist) replaced the thermostst and radiator which cost me 408 :mad:i wasnt really to happy bout this as i had only had the car for a day!! but anyway then the brake pad wear light came on so i had that fixed today!! while i was at the garage i asked them why my oil light flashed 9 times exactly everytime i turned the ignition on??
in there response they checked oil pressure and oil level and checked the oil was all ok and said to me it was just a faulty sensor!! so i have now orderd a sensor from them to cure let alone another problem with the car!!

hope this helps to the oil warning light problem!!
while im here i thought i would ask if anyone knows any one in the south west which will repair my cream leather drivers side seat?? it has quiete bad wear on the right hand side and is another really annoying thing about the car!! and also a good body shop to spray my stone chiped front bumper!! in estroli blue??

:)any help would be great many thanks:)

Hi, i joined here especially to ask you guys if you found the problem to the oil light flashing a number of times on start up and then off. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what it could be. Had the oil level sensor replaced (3 times!!!!!!) apparently the wiring is ok too - power on the sensor, has ground and a signal is reaching the ECU... Any ideas most appreciated! Thanks!

I have had the same on my car since I have owned it, it flashes 9 times exactly on start-up.
The car is an E36 M3 evolution model (321HP), which was only ever supplied to the UK and NZ, South African, US, Australian and E46 cars are different. The E36 M3 evo is an S50 B32 engine, the US and other models are S52 B32 and therefore have a different engine. I have just been through the exercise of trying to find out if I can use the new Castrol Edge Sport oil, which should comply with BMW approvals (BMW LL01 and 04). It turns out that the BMW recommended oil for the S52 B32 engine is Castrol TWS 10w-60 but for the S50 B32 it is 0W-40 and BMW (NZ) usually use Mobil 1, both oil weights should be fully synthetic.

According to the car hand book:

ALSO PERMITTED

* Specific brands of engine oil have been approved in accordance with BMW operating fluids directives and are recommended, please contact BMW service.

I have talked to BMW dealers in New Zealand and oil company specialists they are either are unaware or uncertain that only 0W-40 should be used in this engine.

My theory is this: if 10W-60 has been used in these engines, as the oil is thicker when cold, the pressure will take longer to come up.
I have decided to use the Castrol Edge Sport 0W-40 and will let you know if this changes the length of time the oil light flashes.

Apparently the Castrol TWS 10w-60 was specified in the S52 B32 engine to help overcome some of the double VANOS failures in hotter climates.

S52 doesn't have double Vanos. 10-60 was speced for the S54 only (6 cylinder motors).

Did any of you guys ever find out the cause of the 9 flashes of the oil light? I have the same issue on an M roadsterm had the issue for about 2 years. The garage said its a faulty sensor costing around 70 but would be a big job to replace so its never been replaced. The M Roadster has the same engine as the M3 Evo - S50.

Does anybody know where the sensor is?

Ta.

I have A 98 e36 m3 evo and had exactly the same problem, 9 flashes then stops flashing, it was a faulty oil level sensor that is housed in the engine sump,a diagnostic check costing 35 from my main dealer confirmed this and it seems it had been like this for at least 18 months, replacing this fixed the problem the part cost about 120 from the bmw dealer, (the one for the e 46 m3 is completley different, and for some reason frustratingly cheaper !) I fitted it myself, you have to remove the under tray to gain access, drain the oil, remove 3 bolts and the wire and associated protecting bracketto fix the issue, straight forward really, hope this helps

additional to my last post I feel I should point out; please note oil LEVEL sensor not PRESSURE this is important as it seems to be causing some confusion on this forum thread

Thanks for that. Whilst i have this oil sensor issue, as long as i keep my eye on the level, it should be fine.

Regarding the confusion - the dashboard has 2 oil lights - the one for pressure comes on with ignition and goes as normal and the level is just off centre (left of centre) and stays on.

Thanks, I'll get the garage to change it on next service.

what oil are you running i had that happen on my 98 e36 m3 i ended up having to rebuild motor cause nut came off oil pump your oil pump is probally going out or if you have aftermarket oil filter it will cause this and also a fault oil pressure switch
