hey i have no idea what the problem is but this happens only sometimes and when it does it makes me so mad because i either have to kickstart it or turn on the car depending on the situation... but basically the car turns off when im in gear then i put it in neutral then sink the clutch and press the break to slow down the tachometer goes low then eventually hits rock bottom and the battery light comes on and at this point the car is off.... and its really embarrassing when it happens in the middle of traffic knowing its not my fault! =( i replaced the o.e senser and its also a 1992 318i but if anyone knows what can be the problem i would really appreciate it thanks alot

Ive had the same problem with my 325is since Ive bought it a almost 2 months ago. Ive been sort of heel-toeing the gas/brake when I come to stop cause if I dont continuously give it atleast a tiny bit of gas then it will die about 50% of the time. So Ive gotten used to just giving it a constant supply of gas all the time, no matter what the situation, even sitting at a light. Havent figured it out yet but gonna take it to a shop pretty soon and have them diagnose it. It's a definitely a fuel or air problem but havent figured out which yet

Get your intake air temperature sensor checked
iconz, use the pedal trick to make sure no codes are being held -
To run through the 4-digit code data on your car, put the key in the ignition and turn to the 2nd position, where all the cluster lights come on. Within a second, tap the accelerator pedal (fully) 5 times in rapid succession (total time about 3 seconds). The check-engine light will flash once and then turn off. It will then flash a certain number of times, turn off, flash another number of times and then do it twice more. If there are other codes it will then flash these. For example.... "flash... flashflash... flash... flashflashflash" would be a code of 1213 (whatever that is). If your car is telling you certain codes, you can crossreference these codes online and see if they mean anything's wrong. You will need to know the exact year and engine in your car when you search for a code list, as they differ by engine.

Ive posted about the problem a couple times when I first got the car and didnt really get any suggestions. I cleaned my MAF and that helped it a little bit (maybe it was in my head).
I'll tell you what does help mine though. If you run the all-purpose Seafoam cleaner through your gas tank. That ALWAYS helps mine a lot, but it only helps for a few days. Leads me to believe I one my injectors is getting clogged or is faulty or something.

If the light is on, you have a (or some) codes held so i would get them pulled buddy
a bmw specialist will have the equipment and wont charge much. in the USA, Autozone will do it for free i hear
Take your intake air temp sensor out and chean it (carefully)...i put my money on that being the cause

A new fuel pump is a bugger of a job to replace isn't it? Isn't it at the base of the engine?
