DIY E38 oil changes, and just for fun, paintless dent repair pics as well.

Do you change your own oil? With the CCA discount, the oil and filter kit only costs me about $45 at the local dealer, and it takes about 45 minutes. Gives me an excuse to crawl under the car and check everything out. (Car on jack stands with several wheel chocks of course, and the cell phone nearby in case…)

Keep in mind, this is about the extent of my DIY capabilities. I’m no mechanic, but even I can do this one! Hmmm, now that I think about it, I have no idea what I am looking for when I am under the car. It's not like I'd recognize a problem unless it's totally obvious!

What kind of oil are people using? I've only used the BMW brand oil because it doesn't seem much more expensive than over the counter stuff. Any thoughts?

I use Mobil 1 5-30 in my e46 and my wife's e38. I used Castrol Syntec when it came out a couple years ago, but there was a big hullaballoo about how Castrol wasn't "real" synthetic, so I've stuck with Mobil 1. I think the BMW brand is Castrol Syntec. I'm sure it's just as good, but I've never heard anyone question Mobil 1.

But I can get BMW brand for about the same price. E38 always had BMW brand. Since it's CPO, I don't want to give BMW any reason not to cover me on something later on.

The E39 is under warranty, so I may as well use it for the same reason.

Since it's the same price as Mobil 1, I might keep with it forever.
