O2 sensor light

I bought my first Bimmer last month, a 87 BMW 528e. My O2 sensor light has been on ever since. Any idea's what could be causing it to stay on?

That light is to remind you that the oxygen sensor has to be changed. If you have no record of it and are due soon for an inspection I would change it just to be sure that the ECU (Engine Control Unit) is getting the appropiate signal. I don't have my Bentley Manual with me but I think I remember something about just removing the light after that (I have a 535i).
