I all,

I´m new on this forum,so I would like to congratulate all for this excellent bmw enthusiasts resource.

If possible,I have a few questions regarding my bmw 520i E34 from 1992.

I drive an bmw 530D E39,and I had a 525TDS that I sell not long time ago,so I´m used with diesel cars,now I bought this 520i a week ago as a second car,mostly for my wife.

the car is from 1992 but with only 93.000 miles run, looks like new,the engine runs like a clock the body and the interior looks perfect and other things like the dash lights air conditioned and everything works well.

but in fact I notice two strange things:

today I was verifying the engine oil level, and I noticed that the oil smells like gasoline,it smells a lot,I just want to know if this normal on petrol engines,or I have a problem?

other thing is:

sometimes,on the high-way,at high speeds,I notice a smell, like something burning,it smells like coal or something.

the car as been parked for almost a year inside a garage.just to know, since 1999 till now,the car had run only 6.000 miles, mostly at low or very low speeds(on urban areas),and for short periods each time.

sorry my english,I´m from portugal and a bmw fan:)

Wow definitely sounds like somethings not right. You have gasoline mixing with your oil. This obviously would cause issues with not only your lubrication of your motor, but possibly affecting your cooling. The big problem though is what exactly is wrong with your motor. Unfortunately I do not know the answer.

The gas smell in the oil could be caused by bad rings or by leaking injectors. Have you changed the oil yet?
Not sure what the burning smell is. It could just be dirt and oil burning on the outside of the engine or the exhaust. It would be a good idea to look under the car and verify that nothing is touching the exhaust.

in case of bad rings, the engine needs to be open,it´s that right?
if the issue is the injectors, can they be fixed,or I have to replace a new ones?

thanks a lot for the anwsers.

Bad rings you would need to open the engine. You can have a compresson test to check.
The injectors would either need to be cleaned or replaced. The price is almost the same for either. New ones would let you fix the problem with no down time.
