I'm posting this in hope that someone has had the same problem, or knows how to fix the one my car has got....

I have a 2002 BMW 318is, and recently the battery light on the dash has been flicking on and off (literally for 1/2 a second) every 50 miles or so. When this happens the engine power dips suddenly, and i lose power steering. The lights, radio etc remain unaffected. Half a second later, all is good again...

I had the diagnostic machine plugged in today, and it read "8C TERMINAL R", which pretty much stumped everyone. The Alternator was reading at a constant 14.2 when tested, but we are really struggling to find out what the problem is...

Please, can anyone help???

I have exactly the same problem with my car (e46 valvetronic N42 engine, from 2002) and funny --- I have also the same output in diagnosis ... 8C TERMINAL R... --- along with some other entries... but what does that mean?

Does anyone know what the problem is? I have changed alternator but did not help, problem is still there!

Hi guys. I found this:

8C power supply terminal R = Cluster is not "seeing"12 volts from the ignition terminal (common problem with Carsoft which is unduly fussy about battery voltage - normally fixed by connecting a trickle charger to the battery before you start running diagnostic tests)

Here. (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=14315080)

in the last 2 posts of page 18. I hope this is some help.

I think they mean it is a fault with the reader not getting a full 12v. not actually a fault with the car.:)

The battery light coming on and the associated loss in power etc. Sounds like a loose connection on the battery.

When my wife got her E46 it had the correct power battery fitted, but it was too short for the clamp to hold it down so was free to move around. I think this is worth checking.
I sorted it by buying a new battery from GSF. They listed 2 different hight Bosch batteries for the car (316). The taller of the two allowed the clamp to hold properly. Also check the little white plastic block is located in a suitable hole to stop the battery from sliding backwards.

I have noticed sometimes the main power cable can fray where it enters the battery terminal (Both + and - ) I would check this while I was there.

Faulty Alternator, have it replaced and your problems will disappear.
