Hi all,
Considering selling my Z4MC's wheels & tyres - given that i'd be selling them together, I doubt i'm going to be able to remove my tyre pressure monitors (post-06 car, so i'm assuming it does actually have sensors on the wheels). Can anyone give me some info on where I can get some new monitors/what their cost would be/how they're fitted to new wheels? Oh, and does it make a difference whether I decide to go for some official BMW ones like CSL's or third-party designs? From what I understand, the sensors are integrated into the valve, so presumably buying new valves might well get me the sensors too... Just worries me that the fitting might be quite tricky, esp on third-party wheels...
Any info much appreciated!

You can check Tirerack.com for a reference - they list the sensors as an extra when you price out wheels and/or tires. IIRC they run about $180US for a set.

Thanks CalRick - just spoke to my local BMW dealer who said they couldn't find such monitors for my car (I just told them it was a Z4MC)... Can anyone here confirm that the Z4M's do indeed have monitors on the wheels? Part numbers would be especially useful..!
Thanks!

The 2007 Z4M definitely has monitors in each wheel. Sorry, I do not have part number, but when I ordered tires and wheels from Tire Rack I also got the monitors. It all arrived as a mounted, balanced package.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. The 2006 Z4Ms don't have in-tire sensors, the 2007+ cars do (same across all BMW models, I was told). I paid $200 for 4 sensors and $100 to get them installed in my new wheels, using a shop recommended on Tire Rack's site.

I saved this from one of the poster. I believe The Hack posted it.
The OEM BMW TPM (RDC) Sensors are made by Beru AG, and work on 433MHz frequency.
Part numbers are as follows:
36236779490 - Wheel Electronics Module
36146759741 - Valve Stem
I'm going to do this when I bring it in for an oil change. My SA told me they just purchased a state of the art tire equipment.

My understanding is they have two part numbers for the valve stems. One is for 1.5" and the other for 2". Is this correct?

I'll check.
847 module is the newer number for 490.

Maybe. Z4M's just shows one.

Wow - thanks for all the replies guys! Great to have so many people prepared to look up info - much appreciated.
So the current concensus is that these are the parts no's:
36146759741 valve
36236781847 sensor
But there might be a 2nd valve stem part number with a different diameter (1.5" instead of 2" or vise-versa)?
Thanks again for the info so far!

Parts data doen't show the length. Buy one and measure it.

That looks like the 1.5 inch one.

ROM3N,
I really like your car. Are those OE CSL you have on? Did you installed the 1.5 inch TPM on those wheels? I have OE CSL and not sure if we have two sizes and which one to get.

I sold my OE CSL's and bought Morr Alloy VS7's. Right now I have the 1.5's like the ones pictured. I have never seen a larger valve the two times I purchased them the dealer sold me these. The CSL's are a classic that look great on the M coupe I just wanted a little different more aggressive look.

In the UK you may not have tyre pressure monitors (TPM) on the wheels of any Z4M. The US certainly had them for 2007 onwards due to federal regulation, but the Canadian 2007 & 2008 models retain flat tyre monitoring (FTM) using the ABS sensors. The most reliable way to tell without removing the tyre from the wheel is whether you have rubber or aluminium valve stems. If rubber, you don't have the sensors, but use the FTM system.

jsc - you've just saved me a whole load of trouble - just checked my car, and it's got rubber stems. Means I don't have to go about convincing a garage to remove my current wheels, take the tyres off, remove the sensors, and then put them back together again before actually getting around to fitting my new wheels with the sensors having been moved over. This also explains why my local dealer (well, my 2nd most local - the first one isn't worth asking, they're clueless) couldn't find any sort of sensor for the Z4 in their parts lists.
Thanks again!

As you are in the North West, your local dealers wouldn't be Halliwell Jones in Southport and Williams in Liverpool, would they?

Yep - Williams is my next nearest after Halliwell Jones Chester who I can categorically encourage people to avoid at all costs - they recently got £45 out of me to reprogram my car key settings, even though they didn't tell me it would cost anything when I dropped the car off (minor warranty issues), nor when I picked it up (got a phone call couple of days later). Nor did they fix most of what I wanted fixing (do/did it myself instead). Oh, and they also tried to tell me that fixing my near-impossible to close glovebox and rattling driver-side window weren't covered by warranty and therefore were a 'goodwill gesture'. Now, as far as i'm aware, a warranty covers parts of a car that no longer do what they should. Given that assumption, I can only assume that they don't consider a glovebox that can barely be closed a true warranty issue because, erm, it isn't typically a glovebox's job to open and close..? Maybe it's true that there's nothing there that they can bill back to BMW, but that's besides the point - they should still be forced to honour the warranties of the car brand that they represent. Complete idiots.
Anyway, rant over. I'm guessing you know the area, then? You've clearly done the right thing and ran from the UK... I'm wondering if I can do the same at some point...

I don't hear a lot of good things in general from my friends who have used Halliwell Jones dealers. I'm originally from Liverpool and lived in Formby for a long time (still have family there). The UK is a place I like visiting, but day-to-day life is certainly a lot easier here in Canada (but you do have to like snow for a good portion of the winter!).

Good to hear you're enjoying things over there. Mind me asking (and going completely O/T): how does everyday life compare? Would you say living is cheaper/more expensive? Are people generally nicer or not? Anything else that's different? etc. I'm 23 (24 on the 11th of next month :-D ) and don't have too much holding me here (i'm just inside Wales, 15mins from Chester and about 20/25 from Liverpool) - it makes me seriously wonder about looking into moving over there... How did you end up over there - work?

Now this is weird... My car was produced in Oct06 so that makes it an 07. I do have aluminum valve caps.
The part numbers posted by Ron ckeck out on realoem if you tick the U.S box. If you tick Euro, the parts do not show. The valve just comes up as a part for the Hydrogen 7 series!
Is there anybody with a Euro car that knows for a fact that their car has these?

It's not the caps that you're interested in, xanthopoulos - it's the stems behind the valves. My caps are aluminium too, but the stems are rubber.

How does one remove those valve stems anyway? I bought a set of wheels with RDC stems but don't need them... would prefer fresh rubber stems.
I tried unscrewing the hex while holding the tire side but no luck... how are they supposed to come apart?
There's always the hacksaw of course, but... ;)

nm - if force doesn't work, apply more of it.
Got some nasty vice grip marks on the tire side now, but at least they came apart and out in a reuseable sort of way.
