I have a 96 328i, does the trick where you can roll up/down your windows work for my car. I tried it out and I just don't know if I'm doing it wrong or what. The other thing I was wondering about was testing the computer by pressing and depressing the gas peddle and waiting for the check engine light to blink, giving me the codes. Will this trick work for my car as well?

In my previous post I meant to say when you can roll up/down the windows my using the car key in the door locks.

I think the pedal trick only works on OBDI cars ie pre 96 so possibly this won't work for you. If you have the new shape kidney grilles you have OBDII.

As for the windows I think it may have been a separate option called "window convenience circuit" or something similar so I don't know if you have this or not. To test all you do is leave your windows down then hold the key in the lock position on the outside of the door. (My car is RHD so I turn the key to the right).

It takes a few seconds to start working and I think you have to keep it held in the lock position whilst it closes (not sure on that actually).

The windows should close first then the sun-roof.

I have a 96 OBDII car and it does have the window close feature - I would say there is a good chance yours does too.

Welcome to the 'Fest!:)

All US BMWs have the window closing. You can't open the window from outside, but if you hold the key in the "lock" position the windows and sunroof will close.

Since you have a 1996, you have OBDII, and you cannot do the pedal trick. You have to get a code reader or get to be buddies with a mechanic and have him check your codes on his reader, which will be more detailed anyway.

Put the key in the door and turn it all the way to unlock the doors. Hold it there and see if the windows go down. Also, on the key itself, hold the unlock button and see if they go down. It works on my car, and I'm not sure if it will work on yours, you just need to try it out.

My sunroof won't. My windows, however, do. That's a cool thing to know.

Ryan,
Pretty sure no US E36's got the roll down feature from remote or the keyhole. Just the up. Although I could be wrong about the roll down from keyhole.

Yeah, you'd be more familiar with them than me. I wasn't sure just figured he could try anyway.
