I own a 1986 325es manual. The car basically starting accelerating on its own and would not slow down. The car rpms at 3500 when I put the clutch in.
What is the problem? Is is the cylinder looking object that goes to the throttle? Yikes I am scared.

Check the throttle cable in the engine compartment...sounds like it is getting hung up.

I tried that with my mechanic friend....could it be the Idle Control Valve? I also read on some other posts that it could be the Idle Control Unit located in the glove box. Breaks are smoking and I couldn't even get it in to reverse. Very worries.

Doubt it is the ICV, but it could be bad. But the ICV isn't in the glove box, it is under the intake manifold.

I meant the Idle Control Unit in a green box in the glove compartment some sort of stabilizer for the ICV....?

News to me.

We determined it was the ICV which is being replaced. However, when getting the car to safe parking I had to feather the clutch quite and a bit I hope the linkage isn't messed up. How much would it cost to fix this? Could it possibly be broken. How bad could it really be or just need to be adjusted now?
