After doing some research for my upcoming 60k DIY service here is what i have found (and please provide input if anyone can)

1. tranny fluid

mine is a 04 build with the GM 5 tranny (green sticker)

sticker on the tranny calls for "lifetime fluid" and part # 83220024359 for fluid which translate to TEXACO ETL 8072B...now i can find ANYWHERE that i can buy this fluid......the local BMW dealer said they get it in a 25L barrel and cant sell it (i've heard some dealer will sell it to you by the liter if you have your own container.....at 10-12$ a liter :-( )

so can anyone tell me where i can get this TEXACO ETL 8072B lifetime fill tranny fluid??

and if i cant get it anywhere ...should i just wait till 100k and have the dealer do it then??

2. Front and rear diff

This is just your normal 75w90 fluid which should be straight foward

3. X drive transfer case

this uses the BMW stuff which is about $35/L part # 83 22 0 397 244
my question is.....(and this may sound stupid) which one is the X drive transfer case?? can anyone show me ??

4. PS steering fluid is just ATF synthetic fluid (some say the 11s green bottle would work as well....but the cap specific said "ATF fluid only" so i m gonna trust that)

5. Coolant is the BMW stuff for $20 a bottle at 50:50 mix

6. fuel fliter.......i have yet to figure this one out........nowhere does the inspection or maintenance schedule calls for a change......???

what should i do>>??? esp when i have nooooo idea where the fuel filter is located :-(

man i am starting to HATE the newer cars when EVERYTHING is so called 'maintenance free' when you know is NEVER 'lifetime'

and on top of that EVERYTHING is BMW (or whatever brand) use only ......

have you read/visited any of the DIY message boards? ...there is a forum for do it yourselfers on bimmerfest, for instance. bobistheoilguy will probably have some helpful information for you.

Regarding the transfer case - here are the part numbers on the invoice when they replaced mine:

Fluid: 83251040

Distributor for trans. : 83-22-0-397-244 (Have no idea what this is... but may be needed if you service the transfer case.)

Vodka- I'm going through the same stuff right now in preparation for PMs on our 2004 X3 3.0 Auto. Did you ever change the transmission fluid with more 8072B? Did everything turn out okay?

I've found that the fluid can be ordered from BavAuto in 4ltr bottles for about $70/ea, if you're still hunting-

I would wait to 100k for the tranny/diff fluids. Fuel filter and spark plugs are a good idea even BMW says also it's lifetime.
