Cost to Rebuild 4.4 V8

Any clue as to the cost to rebuild the top end of a 4.4 V8 from anyone who's done it. I have the opportunity to pick up a Range Rover 4.4 V8 that the current owner overheated and drove beyond the point of return that is running well but a good fogger. Lots of water on the dipstick. I won't know without breaking the motor open if the block is damaged or not but as well as it's running I'm thinking the problems are in the heads.

We've just never had to do any engine work on the BMW V8 Rovers yet so I don't have an idea of the costs and haven't gotten a quote from anyone yet.

If it overheated that badly, there's a good chance the heads and/or block are junk. Maybe you should just pick up a used engine?

Unfortunately there are not a lot of them out there. And there is a lot to change if I use one out an X5 (closest variant of the motor). The owner gave the green light to tear it down and find out what's wrong so some time next week I'll know whether it's the heads, the block or both.

I have a line a long block for it already if it needs it.
