1980 Mercury Capri, 4 cyl, 4 speed, 88 hp (in theory; reality was more like 60 hp)
1987 Ford Escort GT, 4 cyl, 5 speed, ~110 hp
1990 Chevy Beretta, 4 cyl, 5 speed, ~180 hp
1995 Dodge Stratus, 4 cyl, slushbox, ~140 hp (A nightmare of a car)
1999 Chevy Malibu, 6 cyl, slushbox, ~150 hp
2002 BMW 325, 6 cyl, 5 speed, 183 hp
2005 BMW 330, 6 cyl, 6 speed, 235 hp
2008 BMW 550, 8 cyl, 6 speed, 360 hp

The only car that did not live up to expectations was the Stratus, which consumed 4 transmissions in 45,000 miles. (It actually needed a 5th when I dumped it before the warranty expired.) I now know why I'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to transmissions.

I also just realized that the 550 has about the same amount of power as my first three cars combined.

I remember that car. I drive both it and the first-gen Lexus LS back to back. I felt that the Lexus couldn't hold a candle to the Q, and Lexus wouldn't take off as a brand. Based on how wrong I was, I now understand that I'm not an average car buyer.

IMO, Infiniti could kick the snot out of BMW if they would stop designing their cars by committee. The styles lack consistency and direction, and it seems they are trying to cater to every possible buyer. On paper, there recent offerings should be real contenders. However, when I see them in person, I want to say, "Yuck."

They could learn something from Cadillac's recent resurgence in that respect.

I came close to buying a G35, old model and new model, twice over the past 6 years, but never pulled the trigger. They're nice and quick yet they don't have the visceral impact of a BMW or certain other cars out there. They just don't feel exciting. The interiors are also a bit cheap feeling, even with leather.

The Cadillac CTS feels like a G35 with great styling inside and out. It still doesn't have the flow-down-the-road feel of great cars like many BMWs, the GTI, and the RX-8.

This thread is fun but exhausting.

I too looked carefully at the G35 before I bought my 325 and 330. I reached the same conclusion...

I curious how the new V-model will stack up. However, BMW's strong resale usually makes it a far better deal than most of the competition, especially when leasing.

I'm 64 outside, but still about 15 inside.

Like uncle ken, I am 64 outside, but young inside. My current 535xi is Car #56 and I do have a complete listing of them, but a bit long to post on here, at least right now. I have likely wasted (enjoyed, is better term) a small fortune on cars over my life. ;):)

My current 5er is Number 12 BMW.

What an interesting thread!

1965 Mustang fastback, Poppy Red, auto (Daddy bought it when I was 15)

1977 Bonneville (Daddy wouldn't let me take the Mustang to college...the COUPE had the 250 lb. doors mentioned above, if parked the wrong way on a hill, I had to get out the passenger side.)

1986 Mazda 626 Turbo (1st car I paid for any of, first stick, surprisingly nice car)

1988 BMW 325e (total POS, swore I would never buy another BMW)

1991 Nissan 300 ZX black, stick (I LOVED that car, put 100k on it)

199? Ford Explorer Sport ( 14 months automatic POS while my leg was broken)

1999 BMW 328i, manual

2005 BMW 545i, manual, sport, black/auburn (best car ever, totaled)
2005 BMW 545i, auto (already dreaming of a 535 manual)

This is one of the most interesting threads I've seen in a while.
Edit: Just realized this is my first post on here; hi everyone!
WELCOME!

1969 Plymouth Duster, Canary Yellow - "shared" it with friends as a tinkering car
1979 Toyota Corrolla - Got it with 220k miles on it. Wrapped it around a tree. Aaahhh...to be young and dumb again.
1995 Toyota Celica GT - The first car I bought myself. Got it my senior year in college, spent time modding it and chasing women with it. Or was it modding women and chasing cars with it?
2002 Acura RSX Type S - Bought it right out of college (the first time). Faster than my modded Celi, handled better, fun to drive. First experience with a 6 speed, it was love at first clutch.
2004 Acura MDX - Bought it for my finacee after a freakin moron in a big truck totalled her Infiniti G20, which Infinity was too stupid to keep around (the G20 was a great car).
2005 Acura TL 6 Speed - The first car I owned and truly loved. I thought I had been in love before, but I hadn't. Very fast, very comfortable, and all the bells and whistles you needed.
2009 BMW 335i xDrive (on order) - Been drooling over this car for a year, had to wait until my lease ran out to order it. Picking it up in April on an ED.

I bought my first car in 1968--a '66 Cutlass Convertible for $1400. My first new car was a '74 TR6 that I purchased in England. My hat's off to those who can list every cat they ever owned. My memory is not that good.
