View Full Version : 2004 Silver Grey 330Ci - Pics and ruminations

It's been one hell of a day. My car arrived 2-3 days earlier than expected, and the new digital camera that I was planning on buying (Canon PowerShot A70 - 3.2 MP) has been in such demand lately that it was suddenly sold out all over town. Luckily, after numerous phone calls, I found a dealer who had just received 2 units - one of them is responsible for the pics below.
The car, of course, is magnificent. As for Silver Grey, any "faint praise" connotation you might have gathered from my previous post is wholly unjustified. I must agree with artvandelay that this is now the color to have - especially on coupes. It is simply fabulous. Few, if any, pictures do it justice, including mine below.
Interestingly, as fate would have it, when I went to transfer the registration and insurance from my Acura, I happened to park almost nose-to-nose with a gleaming 2003 TiAg 330Ci with the M Sport package, both of us "miles" away from other parked cars. ;) TiAg remains a very attractive and highly-desirable color (despite its "me-too" status) but be assured, it paled in comparison, literally and figuratively. Do you get the impression that I like Silver Grey? :D Also, while the M Sport's more "ballsy" appearance is undeniably sexy, I do not prefer the look to mine, and the ride home from the dealer over some of our pock-marked city streets convinced me that the standard sport suspension is plenty firm enough. Further comments on the driving experience will follow once I've spent more time with the car.
Anyway, here come some pics, all at 640x480 to minimize file size. I have mixed feelings about displaying my licence, but I have no image editor to blank it out. The pics I took at the dealer before installing the plates just aren't as good.
Be gentle with me, it's my first time...

Interior - showing real optional brushed aluminum trim (as opposed to standard "titanium") - Capitalist knows how much nicer this is!

Like the color as well.
I'm not fond of the orange reflectors up front on my new one. Anyone know where we can replace with something else?

Nice car! I love those wheels!! If I were to order one of those today, I'd go for that same color combo, only with leather instead of 'ette.
Congrats and enjoy!

Car looks great Gary - I can't believe how much the facelift got trashed when it was first unveiled - completely unjustified.
My brother has a TiAg 325xi, so I regularly get the pleasure of seeing how much better AgGr looks when the two are side-by-side - not to mention the coupe vs. sedan.
ENJOY YOUR CAR!

Thanks, Gary. Great pics but wonderful to hear your musings about Silver Gray. I stopped by our local dealership this morning on a whim and they had not one but two M3 Silver Gray coupes to gawk at. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment now that I've seen the color in the flesh.
Again, excellent choice. Can't wait to read the review of the way it drives.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. It did take some work and time to get these pics up, especially since I had neither the car nor the camera when I got up today.
I'm surprised nobody commented on my mud flaps. I know many people look down on them but with all the salt/gravel that they throw on the roads here in the winter, they're almost a necessity, and actually look kinda cool once you accept them. :bigpimp:

Beautiful, beautiful car. Tasteful color, trim choices. Nice integrated package. One suggestion: get the dealer to remove the "ad" on the rear. The only sour note on an otherwise perfect ride.
Congrats!

Congrats! Thanks... (where's the "blushing" smilie when I need it!). I did consider asking the dealer to omit their "brand", but forgot at the last minute. I do think it's more subtle than many others, and it doesn't bother me too much. :)

You probably already know this, but they can remove it at no charge without damaging the paint. I didn't realize this until recently and drove around for years as the dealer's moving billboard. Grrr.

I went to a local BMW dealership yesterday with my Silver Gray to buy a quart of motor oil. I parked outside and when I came back out from the service department I found about 4 salesmen surrounding my car because it was their first time seeing Silver Gray.
They all loved the new color, and so do I.
Hey Gary,
Just curious:dunno: Since you are in Canada, why didn't you take advantage of the M-Package? Also, I thought the 'ette had completely different seats then Leather, do they have the same seats in those cars just different material? Finally, I did notice the mudflaps and all I have to say to that is :nono:
NICE CAR:thumbup:

Hi, RCK. I have posted extensively on the M Sport package and don't want to belabor the point, but eventually, and after some public soul-searching  I came to the conclusion that overall it's just not for me, especially at the price. AFAIK, the 'ette seats are identical in construction to leather, whether you get the standard or sport seats.

Beautiful color! A few things I noticed (from being "down south"), manual adjust seats (330Ci have power seats as standard equipment in US), new five-spoke wheels standard equipment on 325Ci sport package in US. Was the aluminum trim factory-installed or dealer-installed?

Was the aluminum trim factory-installed or dealer-installed? Thanks. The standard equipment on Canadian and U.S. 330Ci's is somewhat different, as you might expect. You get standard power seats (optional here - $1800 CDN!!) and HK sound, while we get standard moonroof, CWP (surprise!) and non-adaptive xenons. Six of one, half-dozen of the other? :dunno: Otherwise, I think the trim levels are similar. I won't get into comparing our premium package versus yours - too much info at one time!
Since I'm the only one driving my car, I wasn't interested in shelling out extra for the power seats, especially since the manual adjustments are superb. I miss out on the tilt-down passenger side mirror, but can live with that.
As you noticed, the Canadian 330Ci Sport package is the same as the U.S. 325Ci Sport package, and includes Style 119 wheels. We have an additional M Sport package, similar to the ZHP package on U.S. 4-doors, except for the engine/F.D. mods.
Finally, my aluminum trim is indeed factory-installed. We can also get factory-installed optional Birch Wood (as well as Myrtle).
Hope this wasn't too confusing!

garyB,
My car is identical to yours minus the mud flaps and 3.0 engine. I picked it up on Saturday and I just can't stop driving it (already driven nearly 450 miles). IMO silver gray is bar none the best color choice offered. I originally had my doubts, but I now think it is one of the best choices I made. I love the adaptive xenons, although after many attempts, I still couldn't tell if the lights were actually swiveling when turning. I got the same reaction at the dealership. Everyone was quite impressed by the silver gray. Overall, this car has definitely met my expectations and then some. I'd post pics, but since you already posted their is no need.

Hey, Chris . I think we're gonna bore people with all this raving about the color! :D
Unfortunately, I had minor problems (now rectified) transferring my registration/insurance from my previous car so didn't drive the Bimmer again until this morning, after getting it home Saturday afternoon. As soon as I get a chance to drive it at night, I'll relate my experience with the adaptive headlights. BTW, on my car the headlight switch has to be in the "Auto" position for the adaptive functions to activate, but the U.S. website suggests that yours are on by default. Is that correct?

Nice car GaryB! Good luck! I can't wait until I get mine next week. The wait is killing me!!!!
I was thinking getting that black strip on the bottom of the rear bumper painted to match the car and getting the reflectors filled in. The car is gonna be a lease so I'd have to replace it before I bring it back. How much do you guys think a new strip would cost? You think it'll look better painted? Heres an example. I'm not good at photoshop but it gives you a general idea.

Even the M Sport/ZHP packages have a black insert at the bottom to provide visual interest.

Nice car!! Congrats  Brushed aluminum trim sure is nice, isn't it? :D I have a small question for you. I noticed that your interior door handle has silver trim. Is it aluminum too? My door handles are black but I do have an aluminum strip running across the length of the door (see pic). I wonder if it's a Coupe vs. Sedan, 325 vs. 330 or '03 vs. '04 thing?
P.S. You Manitoba guys are damn lucky to have no PST

Another observation:
You leatherette seems to look different from mine as if it had finer texture (yours looks more like leather while mine is a bit rougher). I wonder if 'ette material is different on MY '04s?

on the coupes the door handle matches the interior trim, there is no strip on the panel

As tgravo2 says, sedans get the aluminum trim (or whatever else applies - "titanium" or wood) on the upper door panel, coupes get it on the armrest/door pull. You should be able to see the familiar subtle "striped" effect on the armrest trim piece in my pic - it's fairly obvious on my monitor, anyway.
As for my 'ette, it does have a fairly fine texture but I don't think it's any different from others I have seen - the texture probably just doesn't display well in my pics.
Regarding PST, I think you have us confused with Alberta. Believe me, we pay. :bawling:

I had hopes of beating you to it, but just as in the world cup finals this sunday, you canadians came from behind and stole it in the end... :(
My car apparantly liked the VPC so much it decided to stay over the weekend. This Monday morning it still hadn't left NY, but I'm hoping to get my dirty hands on it tonight... ;)

Thanks, Stefan. Now I've heard from everyone I was hoping would respond. :D I'd love to see your pics - if you haven't yet seen Silver Grey, you're in for a treat!
Now that I'm finally spending some time with the car, it's definitely starting to cast its spell over me. Further to a previous post, I took it out last night and drove around the neighborhood to test out the adaptive headlights - awesome! For chris325Ci, their operation is relatively subtle but immediately apparent - if you can't tell they're working, they're not. Maybe you should have them checked at the dealer. :dunno:

Aaaaaarrgh!
As if your pictures weren't torture enough, the dealer just called to tell me that the car indeed was in, but had a scratch on a fender they wanted to fix. So now I have to wait 'til Friday!
I just hope it's not an excuse to keep the car around for a few days, it's the first facelifted coupe they've got...
Anyway, I'm actually taking the virgin trip in the car to Toronto this Saturday (IF I get it  ) for a trip to IKEA. (Closest one to Detroit...)

Gary,
I mentioned going to Toronto 'cause I had somehow come to believe that's where you live. I look again and your profile says Winnipeg... How dumb am I...
Kinda like a pal of mine from Sweden who went skiing in Whistler for a week:
"Why don't you drive over, you told me you live close to Canada ?" Yeah right...
Anyway, no I won't go check the car out. I'm on a business trip 2.5 hours away from where I live, and while driving back and forth to pick it up makes perfect sense, I'm not crazy enough to drive 5 hours just to see it... ;)
Keep posting how much you like it, helps the days go faster!

The mudflaps look fine. As a matter of fact, after seeing yours, I might get some myself.
You are right about the color, it is stunning, I've seen a couple of them around. Aslo, there's no doubt left in my mind that the 3series coupe is perhaps the most gorgeous coupe out there. It definitely overwhelms the sedan.
Nice choice

It's very much a matter of taste. I've seen it around and sometimes I think "Hmm, that's pretty bland" but then later in slightly different lighting it looks really cool. Also, it looks better up close than at a distance. You can pick up nuances from up close.
The color of the car, like most things aesthetic, have, to a greater or lesser extent a dependency upon the beholder and the weather and lighting and such.
However, oeverall, I think it's a great color

I took the plunge and ordered my 04 330Ci yesterday... after A LOT of deliberate soul searching I decided on jet black... your car made me think really hard about that decision. Anyway, I am curious about the mud flaps; are they dealer-installed? What is the source?
GaryB
05-14-2003, 03:40 PM
They are definitely dealer-installed. Because of the winter conditions here, my dealer installs them on all cars for inventory. Buyers of many - though certainly not all - factory-ordered cars request them as well. I don't know where they source them but I'm sure your dealer could find a U.S. source if you're interested. Search the forum - I know there have been previous threads regarding this.
Glad to hear my pics made you think twice about your color choice - believe me, I know the feeling. Nothing looks better than a gleaming black car - I just don't have the time or energy to keep it looking that way.
BTW, congrats!
Great colour and a very nice ride. Congrats.
By then way I will be in Winnipeg in a month's time for a wedding.

Depends what you're looking for... complete detailing, do-it-yourself, hand wash, "touchless", "soft brush", etc., etc. Be a little more specific and I'd be happy to make some suggestions. :)
Thanks Gary:
I will not have much time to leave the car to a detailing place and was hoping to find a good do it yourself place on the South side close to Holiday Inn.

The Buggy Bath (1560 Taylor Ave. at Borebank St.) and Taylor Esso (1330 Taylor Ave. at Cambridge St.) are popular DIY car washes with multiple bays, fairly close to the Holiday Inn Winnipeg South. From the hotel, head approx. 1 km north on Pembina Hwy. and just beyond a railway underpass, at the second set of lights, you'll reach the intersection with Taylor. Turn left (west) onto Taylor. Taylor Esso is about 1 km down and the Buggy Bath is about 1 km beyond Taylor Esso, both of them on your left as you head west.
Have a great stay! :D

Got it yesterday! Agree with Gary in every respect, it's a FANTASTIC color "live". And the car, well lets just say going from a Miata to a 330 Ci is quite a step in every respect. The minor snag is that the gearshift feels long, especially compared to the little joystick in the Miata. SSK here I come! :)

Stefan, where did you get your car from??? I was at Yark BMW in Toledo yesterday (5/16) to make the payment on my ED car and saw a Silver Grey 3-series ci. Can't remember if it was a 330ci or 325ci. They were detailing it in the showroom in the morning and my salesperson said the owner was picking it up that day (5/16).

Albtsang (sp?), I picked it up from AutoStrasse Ltd. here in Ann Arbor so it probably wasn't my car.
Btw, do I have the record in shortest breaking-in period ? Put 550 miles on the car today (back and forth Toronto), will put another 400 miles in this week on business travel, and next weekend I'm driving to NY...
Can't wait to rev it out, it pulls beatifully up to 4000 where I'm shifting now.
Oh, and did I say I love the car, the colour looks great, the interior is superb... but my wheels look like a disaster from the brake dust... :tsk:

Okay, you guys owe me $1,925!!!!! I couldn't stand it... called my salesman and asked him to check and see if he could change my jet black/black 'ette 330Ci to silver grey/nat brown. He called back and said it was possible... so I told him, "Do it!" Now my car will cost me an extra $1,925 ($475 for metallic and $1450 for leather). Of course, if I had known I could get this combo from the start, I probably would have. He also told me that my order has been shoved up about 4 weeks, from week 27 to week 23 production. He told me this might happen, as "sold" orders get higher priority; unfortunately this might mean that the car will be past the stage of alteration. I'll know by the end of the week.

As I've said before, I strongly considered that combo myself, but chickened out, sight unseen, despite an official "recommendation" by BMW Canada. Now that I'm familiar with Silver Grey, I think it will probably be great! It's amazing that nobody has yet posted pics of it. :dunno:

No idea - standard on my car - one of the few remaining visual distinctions between the 325Ci and 330Ci.

Observation...
I saw a 330CI sport pack in Silver Gray this past weekend. For some reason the M68 wheels really stood out as looking especially good in combination with SG (IMO). I really like the contrast in silvers and contours. Chaaaosss's photo reminded me of this observation.
Anyone else notice this?

Anyone else notice this? Chaaaosss's wheels, like mine, are style 119s. The 68Ms (skarl, Magicfrog and prel415) are classics and still look great but I know Chaaaosss would assert, and I would agree, that the 119s are even nicer! Easier to clean, too! :D

Oh man I am just drooling over all these SG pics! Especially the one in the sunlight! The sun on it makes it look like Chrome Shadow.
And to think my car is going to production this week!!! These last few weeks of waiting are gonna kill me.
I've been wanting to see pics of Silver Gray for a while to reassure myself of my decision to switch from the current Titanium Silver `02 330Ci I drive (being replaced by BMW under Maryland's Lemon Law). All I had seen up until 2 weeks ago was pics on BMW's website. Then I saw a Silver Gray 2003 330i on the dealer lot and I was shocked! It looked nothing like the pictures on the website. Something about the difference in body style, and especially, the black molding all the way around, made me really not like the color as much. At this point I was wondering if it was too late to change my color choice. I called around several dealerships in the area and found one that had a SG 330Ci on the lot. Drove there that evening to look at it. Very impressed! I'm gonna be even more impressed with mine with the optional 18" style 71 wheels :D

Here is the only unofficial pic I have of mine:
