Okay, I know I have had my share of reliability issues with this SAV, but this one is kinda funny.

So, last month, one day before the 4 year warranty runs out on our 2004, my family tells me "Dad, the door pulls are loose". Sure enough, there's just a little bit of play on the top anchor point of the door pulls. So, I am not going to rush to bring this in to get it covered under warranty, I figure it is a simple job of tightening the anchor screws.

So, I search various forums to find a thread that covers door panel removal and find, in this forum, a great post by Vodka G (post #2):

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287164

Tackle the rear passenger door first. Looks like some of the plastic has broken off, which provided the critical leverage point to securely anchor the door pull (see first pic). The anchor screw is still on tight and there is noticeable play at the top end of the door pull. Simple repair, add a thick washer between the screw head and the door pull and all is well.

I then tackle the front door pull and notice that the appearance of the plastic is the same. BUT, when I look closer, I see there there is NO screw attaching the door pull to the door (see second pic).

So, I take the screw from the middle of the door pull and use it to anchor the top end of the door pull.

Gee, I wonder how many other pieces never got properly installed and wonder if this shoddy workmanship as the underlying reason for all the problems I've been having with the SAV. Must be a Friday car?

:dunno: I feel like I'm the only one on this forum that's pleased with the quality on my X3. Mine seems more solid than my mom's '06 325i, which seems to be a model of cost-cutting everywhere I look.

I, too, feel that I have been fortunate . . . compared to some of the other stories I've seen on this website. (Although it didn't hurt that I selected a 6-speed manual over the "Steptronic".)

Except for a couple of "idiot light" problems with the oil-level sensor (specifically: the instrument-cluster OLS was reading "overfull" when it was, in fact, filled exactly to spec), I have had no problems with my X3 whatsoever.

It drives better than any *car* I've ever owned!

I am happy with my 05 X3. Did have an instrument cluster failure that was replaced with a unit air shipped from Germany. Other than that, no problems.

Cheers

I love my 05 x3. But then again my last car was a toyota corolla so doesn't take much to impress.

I am VERY pleased with the build quality of my '06 X3! I don't happen to like the stiff ride, but the build quality is exceptional IMHO. I am approaching 31K miles and trying to find something extra for the dealer to fix when I bring it in for the first big service. It has been totally trouble free (knock on wood) to date.

I am on my second X3 and have to say that I have been very pleased with the fit and finish. Had the door seals replaced on the '04. When I first got my '07 the right wiper wasn't doing a good job of maintaining pressure on the glass. A quick trip to service fixed that.

My '04 X3 3.0 has been bulletproof, only scheduled maintenance. No rattles, loose stuff, no muss, no fuss, nada, zip . . . . (so far, so good . . . .)

2006 has been flawless, only required replacement of bluetooth module when it was brand new because phone wouldn't pair.

other than that, not a single problem.

Pretty tight and rattle free at 21k

My 2007 X3 has also been pretty much flowless so far - now at ~25K miles (~41K km). An excellent car that I got really used to despite a few quirks.

Our '05 X3 was so good we bought an '08 X3. After three months the '08 is absolutely perfect and is improved over the '05 in many ways. I would give the '08 X3 a 10 out of 10 for initial build quality.

I had a rental '07 Mercerdes for 10 days last year and was not blown away by any means. Very ordinary, under powered, under sprung "sports" sedan. The doors had a nice solid feel to them though....

Hope that was in jest, if not, you are why most people think those driving BMW's are snobs. But sometimes that shoe fits.

We have had no build quality issues with ours. Has been an excellent vehicle from day 1.
