View Full Version : do you guys get attention with your 5 series?

I have to admit, ever since I had my alpine white 535i I have gotten plenty of complements from strangers. I have only had my car for about 6 months. Sometimes people just start waving at me and I don't even know these people. I have driven many cars in my lifetime and non of the other cars got as much attention as this one.
One time, I had these 2 girls riding up ride beside me on the highway to tell me they liked my car. So, in other words I LOVE MY 5!! Do you guys get attention with your car like I do or is it just me and my good looks??:D

No, nobody has ever said anything to me. Maybe because I am not exactly hot, and am a bit of an old fart. :)
OTOH, I have noticed that I get some respect on the road. When people see them angel eyes coming up, I get consideration. In heavy, fast traffic, once I beat someone to a spot a couple of times, they never try to beat me, and just wait till I get through.
It helps to have tons of power at any speed.

Not to me. There are a ton of 5-series in the SF bay area. They do get out of the left line more often when I come up behind them. People just ignore econocars there.

Some on the left lane actually slammed brakes when I came up behind them. So it does get noticed.

While I've gotten a few compliments, I got an interesting one about my license plate.
A woman walks by and says, ,,Sprechen Sie Deutsche?''
After a quick ,,Nein," she enquires about why my car has Munich license plate, complete with the appropriate stickers and such. I then went into my description of European Delivery, which is next to impossible to explain in less than 5 or 6 sentences.

I've defenitely received more looks driving my 5er than compared to when I had my jeep. Lots of thumbs up from other BMW drivers, and lots more rice burners (equipped with chrome rims of course) reving their engine at stop lights when I'm next to them.

5's are quite rare here. So we get lots of looks. Many of the 5's you do see are 530 or 535. Lots of 3's in this area.
I've had a few people (only had the car a few months) when pumping gas say they really like the looks of the car and always say something about the interior(Oriental Blue on the Auburn interior really pops).

I read somewhere that California takes 25% of BMW's production. Looking around here, I believe it. Can't drive anywhere without seeing plenty of them, old and new. There are over 3600 listings with the word BMW in them for the SF craigslist.

Twice I've been stopped about the Scion xA, both times by women in their 50s-60s. Boo yeah, baby! Ahem.
If you seriously want to attract women, get a large convertible like an old e320 or a Solara. Women, young and old, are crazy-go-nuts for them.

Cool bike! What model is that; Scalpel? I used to ride Cannondale:thumbup:
Note: I probably look at 5's more so than 3's (minus the drop tops). Maybe b/c they are less common that the 3? :dunno:

I hope you're kidding? Solara (and Seabring) scream old man 'vert. (or old lady). If you want to attract women (and you're thinking drop top) I'd say M3 'Vert or M6 'Vert. Just my $0.02, but what do I know. :dunno:

I live in LA. Everyone and their brother has a BMW. They are a dime a dozen and mine is not exactly special. Looks just like the rest of the 4000 I see every day. Now if I had an Aston Martin, then I might bet some attention.

I certainly hope not. My wife used to get a bunch of freaks who drove Audis, chasing her all around to give her the thumbs up (she had an S4)
The 5-series is a mass produced car, and around here (I live in OC as well) there's enough of 'em where they're common place.

I know my e39 5 series gets noticed alot around here. But people with e60 5 series dont get paid any mind. The only time I look at them is when its a mtech package or an m5. Other then that, they tend to blend in with the camry's and accords......no offense.

None... and that's the way I like it. If strangers notice your car, the cops will too. The husband used to have a 911 convertible, it actually made me uncomfortable the way people would stare at you without even being subtle about it.
I'm sure I don't represent all women, but IMO, a big hoopty convertible is not the way go get attention from girls. You'll need an Aston Martin, Italian super-car, Porche that's not a Boxster, possibly a classic Mustang.....

I don't think they are particularly good looking cars. Except with the aero kit and sport package with 172's.
Which I have.
Which draws lots of attention.
I don't look at other people so I don't know if others are looking at me.
I certainly think twice before driving to WalMart, but interestingly there are plenty of Benz and BMWs parked there, along with all the old beat up cars and trucks, minivans, etc.

Rice Burners. I HATE Rice Burners!
As soon as I bought my E39 540i SP, it seemed like chopped Hondas were rolling up on me like flies on poop. :tsk: I live in the Seattle area, and everyone there seems to think a Civic with noisy exhaust is some kind of supercar. Bizarre. :dunno:
Over the course of 8 years, I usually shrugged these 17-24 year-old morons off, but I got pretty sick of it. :banghead: I gave in a couple of times and it was never, ever, a contest. :nono: Don't know what those idiots were thinking. :slap:
Most fun I ever had: an M3 rolled up on me on West Marginal Way - a 4-lane industrial street south of downtown, with very little traffic and a 2.5 mile run between lights and turns. He got the jump on me, and I had a passenger, but I gave him a pretty good run for the money. Of course, an M3 is gonna smoke a 540i with a passenger, but when we both reached the red light, we just looked at each other, shared a $h*t eating grin, waived, and drove our own separate way in a dignified manner.
There's just nothing like a BMW. :supdude:

My Mazda RX8 gets way more looks. Matter of fact a few weeks ago some teenage girls screamed out "I love your car!" That was about the most excitement this 46 yo has had in a long time.
Well I don't have mine yet but because I live in the Redneck Riviera I can anticipate the reactions. Because I will have all tail/brake and headlights working and no broken windows or kids crawling around inside, I will likely be mistaken as a snowbird and subsequently given The Finger. Then they will see the Florida plates and realize I am from L.A. too. L.A. = Lower Alabama. :)

Once my 535xi gets here, I suspect I won't get as many looks as I currently do in my S4. The 5 is definitely more commonplace than the S, even though they are identical in performance.
That's one of the "feel good factors" about having that "S" or "M" or "AMG" badge slapped on your trunk -- it gives the car a little bit of identity. I'd argue an M3 stands out more than the regular S550 or 750iL.

Yeah but majority of people don't know what those symbols mean, and don't have that much attention to detail to know the difference.
Most people will glance at your S4 and think oh another Audi A4.... no biggy.

Here is a story that says if you want to get the attention of a woman you need to drive a fuel efficient car rather than a sports car:
http://green.yahoo.com/blog/ecogeek/539/ecogeeks-get-all-the-girls.html
"Nearly 9 in 10 women (88 percent) say they'd rather chat up someone who owns the latest fuel-efficient car versus the latest sports car."
Hell if I wanted a girl who wanted me for my Car she probably wouldn't be worried about global warming. Hell she probably couldn't even SPELL BMW. :)

Funny thing is, I have had three or four "thumbs up" and two conversations on how nice my car is. Generally older men and women driving either a Lexus or Mercedes, I did have an older gentleman give me his list of former bimmers he's owned. I still come home and tell my wife as she doesn't believe that a car can bring people together, hahaha.

I get a lot of attention even though I live in So.Cal... I'm sure it's because of the ED plate under my CA plate.
I don't like the attention since 8/10 cars that pull up next to me tries to race me on a green light, such as large SUVs, Vans and even little P.O.S. stock 100~200hp class cars.
I let them win :) I know what my car can and can't do... especially when next to a 335i or M5/m6 which are also a dime a dozen here in Orange County.

since the used market is full of the 5ers here, the 520s, 520ds, and whatnot, they really don't do anything to impress anyone here. When it came out it was a looker, but general consensus at least here seems to be the E39 is a good looking car end bangled up new 5er is amusing at best. Funny how world is, eh? :)
PS: I think you gotta have the sport package on it to really have people feel threatened a tiny bit. Most here are driven by women. :)
