I have ordered an Imola Red 330i ZHP which I expect to have in a few weeks. I was at a local dealer who had an Imola Red ZHP. While the car had not been detailed, I could not believe the amount of orange peel it had. It was the worst paint job on any BMW that I have ever seen.

I hope that my Imola Red ZHP will not look like that one! Anyone out there with any experience with the color?

All BMWs orange peel. You can't escape it.

I know but the amount on this car was much more than average. I wondered if it had anything to do with the color.

sorry for the ignorance, but what do you mean about orange peel? :dunno:

It's when the paint has a finish like the peel of an orange....bumps and imperfections. The car doesn't have orange paint.

Unfortunately, the only way to prevent orange peel (texture) is to wet sand during the painting process. It is very labor intensive and therefore quite expensive to do. I think the only manufacturer to do so is RUF (hand built modified porsches), which also happens to be the worlds smallest manufacturer (by yearly production).

I agree, all modern BMWs have grips of orangepeel. I think it's more obvious on a non-metallic color like white (my car) or Imola.

Yes, like Kaz said orange peel is more obvious on Uni Colors (ie non-metallic).

I have seen it on almost every car, be it M5, M3, various AMGs etc.

And people wonder why a decent (not great, just decent) repaint can run mid four figures.

Do you remember the Mora Cabrio pics I posted on the OT board ? It is an individual paint with a list price of $ 1500, but still full of orange peel.

EDIT : here is the pic

Yes...I believe that somebody commented on the peel. :D

$1500 for that paint is just for the color though, not for better application.
